The problem, I think, isn't with "3D" itself. The problem is that 3d is too often consider an easy way out. 3d is a form of art just like any other, and as such, getting a presentable result takes time and effort. It's an entirely different skillset, but parallel to 2d art. Mashing a couple of models together and taking a snapshot is the equivalent of a traditional artist doodling a sketch onto a notebook, scanning it and putting it in their VN. If you take the proper time to adjust lighting, poses, aftertouches, etc... I think you'd be amazed at the difference in reaction you'd get. But equally important is the tools you use; the software, and the models. Ask any professional artist, they'll probably tell you how important the choice of pencils and paper and whatnot is. Same here. Alas, the best costs money, as is the case with anything at all.

It's worth mentioning that the standards for 3d models have literally skyrocketed in the past few years.

One other problem mentioned is the mixing of 3d and 2d. Let me give you some advice on the matter.
A photograph, too, is essentially reality, a three-dimentional world, captured and put into 3d. So what's the problem then? The problem is that the same goes for your models, they are 3d-turned-2d. You are attempting to insert the layer of your models into the world of the photograph, which has ceased to exist. It's now just a layer, so inevitably, you need to work with layers. The same goes with regular 2d; In VN's we usually see "sprites" on a foreground layer, independant from the background. The same problem exists. Those sprites can't be put "into" the background, as it's two-dimensional. You can only get CG's when they're both "captured" at the same time.

So you'd need to either:
- Make your backgrounds 3d too, AND put the models in the 3d world BEFORE rendering the whole thing, making it unified, but keep in mind what I mentioned earlier; Standards are high these days, and getting a decent result with this method will take a lot of effort.
- Make your 3d models like "sprites". Keep them independant of the background. Put them in poses, knee- or waist-high facing the screen. Use image editing software to give them more personality and some effects to make them look pretty. Don't try to use effects to make them look drawn; it shows, and doesn't work anyways.

The game would stand out from the others, if it was in 3D, and would still be classed as a visual novel, as long as the images were all 3D. I cant understand why, people dislike other styles of visual novels, i personally am open to all different types of games.
Hunh? If you're serious, send me a PM and I'll send you a link to that visual novel.

Some of my visual novels are at http://www.the-new-lagoon.com. They are NSFW
Poorly done hand-drawn art is still poorly done art. Be a Poser (or better yet, use DAZ Studio 3D) - dare to be different.

Alright i have just played the whole game, btw its a sunday, and sundays are always boring, so this was game was very amusing.
I played the game, and i think that giving you the choice to play an adults version and a safe version, i chose the safe version. I think its great that the story seems to be set in 2005. The story resolves around Vera at the beggining then changes to a club scene. The 3D animations remind me of the sims, like the part where you can choose to dance, or the backrub part. I guess it depends on what choices you make in these novel games, i decided to not go on the ship and the game ended. I think the game is great, it has a nice story.
