Dragon's Blood Demo

#1 Post by slyfoxxy » Sun Jul 29, 2012 9:58 pm

This demo includes full prologue and Chapter 1/2 with each decision branching to a different path, allowing for maximum replayabilty.

MAC Version

I fully intend on changing the font for the final version, once I find something that fits, so please forgive me if its a little hard to read. I'd just like to know what people think of the story progress so far, the sprites and how it plays.

Hi slyfoxxy - I just wanted to say I downloaded the game and ran it, but the font was a major barrier for me so I closed it after about 1 minute. I know you said you were going to change the font, and I fully intend to give it another go when you do, but I find I need to work really hard to read the game as it currently is so I'm not enjoying it. I'd rather play the game when I can fully immerse myself - because it looks really nice!! ^_^

Just thought I'd let you know I gave it a go - since no one has posted anything yet. ^_^

It's pretty intersting so far, the Art also looks quite good ;)
It would be nice if you could somehow show the difference between dreams and reality in the prologue, as it was a bit confusing at first...

Also, the way the characters enter the scene seems weird... If the seer still has her eyes closed but is already talking with someone, that person should appear at the same time as the background.

At last, the characters move around a lot.
That's fine, since this is kind of an action game, but it would be even better if their poses actually changed - like holding a weapon or something ;)

Haha, sorry I'm complaining so much, but the more critique I give, the more interesting the game is, right?

I look forward to the complete version!

Didn't see that so I downloaded from the first post...... :(
Anyway, I live in England, so I don't write in American English, I can but I rarely bother, along with correct grammar in forum posts . It's not uber-thorough, but I did pick up on a couple of things

Presentation
The start screen suggests a fairly dark and violent story, so far it doesn't seem all that dark
When you click on load game, the writing seems a little squished, boxes only fill top bit of the screen
Boxes only at top of preference screen also
I really like the parchment dialogue box
I like the font, but after a while it gets a little tricky to read, but there is plenty of room in the box for it to be a little bigger, or change the colour, also the comma has a very strong resemblance to the period...... And 's' looks like a 'c'.

Inconsistencies/Miscellaneous
It tells you Rein grinned broadly, but we can see his facial expressions
In the beginning when she sighs, she sighs with no capitalisation, when the handmaiden knocks, both words are capitalised 'Knock Knock' as opposed to 'sigh', then on the last screen before the end of the prologue 'Gasp' is capitalised. Then when she sobs, 'Sob* (this after Gideon's death on the path that you chose to follow him), that shouldn't have an asterisk as it should obey the style which you have used so far which is a pair of single speech/quotation marks. Same with 'SMACK*
Gideon says "Running Late again I see." I think there should be a comma before "I see", but I'm not certain, however "Late" shouldn't be capitalised.
When Gideon says "Good morning My Lady." There really ought to be a comma between the greeting and the term of address. "My Lady" is a grey area, and there are a whole bunch of grammar rules surrounding its capitalisation, Milady or M'lady should always be written as such, "My Lady" would always be capitalised if you are referring to the Virgin Mary, but generally speaking it should be lowercase, but it depends on her particular role in this society. It mostly follows the same rules of sir and ma'am in terms of capitalisation, however if you were using it as part of her title then it would be capitalised. E.g. "My Lady Evangeline"
"One of the soldier's had managed to sneak up behind me, holding me fast." There shouldn't be an apostrophe.
Soon after Gideon should have 'sunk' to the ground rather than 'slunk' which is a descriptive verb of movement.....
Also his mouth should probably have been forming an 'o' rather than an O, unless you meant oh.
After that, the next couple of screens start with lowercase letters instead of capital.
When he addresses her a priestess, you might want to capitalise that as he is using it as a substitute for her name, so I would likely consider it in terms of a nickname/alternative to her name, much like Seer rather than a term of endearment such as 'love' although if they were regularly and specifically referred to as love, then you could capitalise it. Like you would capitalise Bob, even thought is a nickname, but not dear, unless you used that to refer to a specific person on a regular basis. But you don't have to capitalise it if you really don't want to.

Music
I like the music for the most part, but the music on the menu doesn't seem to fit with the rest of it.

Sprites
The assassin kind of has a curving in bit above his left elbow
I really like the outline which separates them from the background
When the assassin turns and flings himself out the window, he is shown rising up, my immediate impression was that he had jumped straight up in the air. Maybe simply have him disappear, before telling us, or tell us before/as he does it.
Good range of expressions.
I really like the style and shading
It kind of looks like Gideon, Rein and the assassin are all lit from their left, but Sebastian appears to be lit from his right. Even though sometimes he isn't really standing in the right position in relation to the others for this to happen.

Backgrounds
The backgrounds are very beautiful, but imo the pink-purple forest seems slightly out of place in context with the others

I downloaded the updated font version and I can read it but it's still really small. In fact it's a little painful to read. The whole game's pretty small. A lot of games use waist up or thigh up sprites so that you can see their expressions in more detail. I know this gets rid of some of their poses, which is too bad, but it would make it much easier to see their faces which I think is more important. Font's the big issue though.

Grammar-wise you should go through and check to make sure all your sentences start with a capital letter. There are a surprising number that do not.

Art, characters, story, and music were awesome. You have a good variety of characters and they feel like people not plot devices. I really liked Evangeline's reaction when someone saw her face. I always like it when the main character has a personality and a history.

I love the art and was sucked in by the plot. You've got good pacing. You start out with an action scene that really kick starts the plot.

I'm looking forward to playing it when it's done!

Argh, downloaded the hard-to-read-font version (didn't see your post with the updated versions...), but I pushed through with playing it and I found that I liked it. The sprites were beautiful (I like how they were full-body ones), and the backgrounds were, too. I loved the music (especially the one with the action-y theme). The story was pretty good, though I spotted a few mistakes here and there.

I have to ask, though--will Evangeline be having a side image sprite? Sorry if you stated it somewhere and I missed it >_<

I can't wait until the full game! The demo left me wanting to find out what happens next :D
Also, there was a part in the story where the character's name on the textbox was incorrect, I believe. It happens after choosing the "Say something" choice in the forest. I think it's Evangeline saying something to Gideon, but the name was Aito instead of her name.

I don't have much to say in the story department, as I'm not all that much of a writer. However, I found the font too small to read, and the window dimensions unusual. On smaller monitors, it doesn't even fit. Also, perhaps the text could move a little bit faster?

That said, I like the GUI and the aesthetic. It's just a shame that so much gets cut off on a small monitor! :'D
