I've had tons of influences on my style.

I first started with copying and tracing over anime characters back in 4th grade. Then as time passed, I tried to draw from imagination. But my style was still like of those I copied. I never copied one anime in general to be honest. Like I draw Naruto, CCS, Bleach, Dragonball, etc. I wasn't picky.

Then, I think around... 7th or 8th grade, I got addicted to manga. Like TOTALLY addicted, that I copied styles like Arina Tanemura, Mayu Sakai, Haruta Nana, and all those shoujo-centered manga you see. Like if you see my art (Gosh darn it, I still can't figure out where in the UCP can I make a signature), you'd notice that I draw big eyes still like in shoujo manga. But after all that, I try to experiment with different styles. It differs from time to time since I'm still somewhat looking for it. Or maybe the style that I actually love and all. I don't know. I've been through a lot of styles xDDDD

But now, I somewhat still draw in shoujo manga style but with a dash of realism in them compared to before.

My first BIG influence was George Perez. He drew the New Teen Titans, Wonder Woman and the Avengers to name but a few. I would sit there and try to redraw his panels for hours. He is the reason I wanted to learn to draw. I am going to meet him in August at the Chicago Comic Con and just thinking about it almost makes me pass out. I am so excited!

My second BIG influence was Joe Mad. He did Uncanny X-Men in the late 90s, The Ultimates, the video game Darksiders, to name only a few. Joe Mad is one of the first artists to really merge the Eastern and Western styles together. When I first saw his art back in 1996 I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was just jaw dropping beautiful. When I met him at Comic Con two years ago I about squealed like a fan girl!

When I was little, we had very VERY few anime on TV here in Holland (and nowadays, we dont even have a single cartoon on TV, curse you live-action shows such as ICarly >:( ), one of the few were Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Medabots and Digimon, those anime's inspired me to draw, but from there on my style of drawing just evolved and changed...

I like Akira Toriyama's art style, but i was more influenced by the Fleischer Studios and the 1930's rubber hose style. Grim Natwick who had worked for them is one of my most fave artists of all time. He was known to be able to draw great anatomy and was best at drawing female characters. So i would have to say Grim Natwick is my influence becuse he was the first person to draw Betty Boop. Grim also worked for Disney on "Disney's Snow White".

Here are a few of his artworks and one of his model sheets that i adore, including his original artwork of snow white:

Everyone has an artist they adore, so i guess i'd have to go with the western artist known as Grim Natwick. I understand that people proberly dont know who he is today. If i'd had to go with a manga artist i would have to say Naoko Takeuchi, her artwork is beautiful. I personally cant draw anime looking characters, and i dont know basic anatomy. I suppose everyone has their own style but someone has to influence you. Could be from your fave show or novel.

R.I.P Grim Natwick, I loved ya work:

What would make your eyes
Glisten like mine
With loves divine!

Boo-Boo I couldn't aspire....to anything...
Higher...than to fill that one desire to make it
My own....Bop-Bop-a-Dop-Boop-Oop-a-Doop honey?

Oh my god YES what a good influence

I find inspiration from and get influenced by waaaay too many artists to list here but I guess the biggest influence at the moment is the artwork of GigiDigi, the creator of Cucmber Quest. Her character designs, sense of humor and use of color are AMAZING, and I'm so excited for her first book to come out!

I was a huge Puzzle Bobble(mainly the first four) fan so I started out trying to imitate the style

Though currently I'm trying for a combination of Chuck Jones, most anime/games in the 90s/early 2000s(LAWL THOSE HAIR AND EYES eg Fushigi Yugi, Chuka Ichiban, Lunar, Key the Metal idol, Evangelion, Inuyasha), Puzzle Bobble, 90s-2002 Nomura style and also add some stuff of my own

Looking at my art one would never guess, but I was once heavily influenced by Kiritani Miki.
Before I had internet I drew around 15 mangas into small notebooks, all with the style from her.
But it was just a copy of her style and I couldn't make all I wanted since I wasn't familiar with it.

Later, I made a fatal error...
I got this book and did what was written inside: KLICK
That ugly style was sticking with me for 3 years!
I burnt almost all my pictures from that time later...

I have to say the truth, I don't know what influenced my after that.
I did read a lot Yaoi manga (I was in my teens, so porn seemed just good enough), so maybe a few of those artists made my style change (even though I only remember the name "Naono Bohra" since I still like to read her stuff). I think, the talk with guys from my favorite board as well as some tutorials on Deviant Art pushed me slowly into my style. The rest was me wanting to become better and improving by self-study and trying.

On a side note, I seem to have influenced around 20 people in the case of coloring pictures. I did 2-3 tutorials on coloring and they made fanarts using exactly the things I named despite them never using them before. Made me kind of proud ^///^

Ahhh! XD They have that in Germany too?!
I bought one of those books, but thankfully I was already on my way to developing my own style before I got it. It should really be illegal to give young, naive, and impressionable artists bad advice like that...

I was fucking 11 when I got that.
I learned nothing from it except to make my characters as ugly as can be and that making blue pictures will make everyone cry (yeah, sure).
The funny thing is, that you can make review for manga tutorial books on Animexx (the biggest manga webside from germany) and this book has over 80 negative reviews xD
The sad thing is, on Amazon is it a product with 4 stars, said to be "recommended for beginners". Poor kids that have to go though that disturbing style too...
The manga tutorial by Akira Toriyama was a dozen time better and I don't even like that Dragonball-style :'D

LOL, I forgot about the blue pictures thing!
I gave the book to my sister after awhile so I don't know where it is now... but I remember the chibi's... UGH, the chibi's... you know, now that I think about it, it might be the result of that book that I've been put off chibi style for life.

I can't believe this kind of books still sell. Around here, you can walk into a Hobby Lobby or Michael's and there will be like five different "How to Draw Manga" books with brightly colored (and sometimes rather sloppy) vector art that was obviously traced from an existing anime show and with descriptions next to the characters about what archetype they are and how they should act. What? NO! This is NOT HOW YOU BUILD GOOD CHARACTERS!! All authors trying to make a quick buck ripping off innocent kids, THINK WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO THE ENTERTAINMENT OF THE FUTURE!! YOU ARE SABOTAGING CREATIVE MINDS!!!

One thing they are good for is playing "spot the plagiarism" though... just have your laugh in the store and then put 'em back on the shelf. XD

I still like those more then that stupid book xD
Had a book about "How to make a shoujo manga" KLICK. The figures were 150% X1999-charachters, but who cares, if kids can learn an awesome style from it, learn to what absolutly NOT involve (like how everytime one parent is dead and the characters should have a depp conversation on a playground), if they don't want to have a manga like 5000 others have done.
It was quite helpful, especially the tutorial about Accessories and wrinkles.
Why is it, that almost all "How to manga"-books are almost always from america?
Maybe that is why it's so problematic and cliche ôo

So much, I'd say. I started by eyeballing, but due to lack of internet, I didn't get very far. Let's just say How To Draw Anime books are the most awful start I've ever seen.
Then there was DeviantART...
Anyway, due to some amazing gorgeous realistic arts, I'm striving for that particular style. The actual influence is a bit blurry. I spent time staring at photos instead of trying the artists' style. I wanted to paint realism, not to follow their art style.
So yeah.
