UNCLE MUGEN'S BACKGROUND TUTORIAL [Exterior Scenes]

Finally! An updated tutorial on how to create beautiful background graphics for use in Visual Novels or OELVN using Sketchup and Photoshop! Perfect for people like me who are untalented in drawing backgrounds. I finally managed to streamline the process enough to create a tutorial so I can share my technique. With this, it is now one step closer to that quick, cheap and beautiful background graphics that are inaccessible for us mere mortals…

You can view the video tutorial here [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVAfEFQRsFI ] I recommend to view it in fullscreen…

With this now all of our backgrounds will look the same… Lol!
Note:

This tutorial is perfect for outdoor shots but not applicable for inside shots especially rooms with limited light. I’ll do a tutorial on that soon…

While I used SU Podium Renderer on this tutorial… it is expensive and can be replaced by any other renderer ( there are several freeware renderers available) as long as it has the option to render in clay mode (textureless). One good example is Kerkythea [ http://www.kerkythea.net/joomla ] and IDX Renditioner Free Edition [ http://www.imsidesign.com/Products/Rend ... fault.aspx ]

Sketchup is a 32 bit application (Seriously why?) so even if you have monster memory you’ll still hit the ceiling sooner or later so be careful and not to put too much load on the scene.
Thanks to Sake-Chan (Sake Bento) for lending her beautiful voice and little_misere for the Lucy sprite…

More to come soon...

ONE MORE THING!

This is not covered in the tutorial but if you wanted to change the position of the sun manually [See Attachment]

First, turn on the Shadows by going to

VIEW TAB > SHADOWS and toggle the Shadow option (Enable)

Once the shadow is visible go to

WINDOW TAB > MODEL INFO > LOCATION

And adjust the solar orientation. This is especially very useful in case you wanted to adjust where the sun rises and sets instead of rotating your model or your camera manually.

Told you it was easy to use... though I'm still wondering why your game requires a huge amount of BG's... Lol!...

Maybe it's the way he tends to say 'yes' kind of like 'yeeessss'? Which is vaguely creepy but funny at the same time, at least to me.

On topic, I should try this at some point, because as of right now my way of doing backgrounds is find free ones that work and if I can't find one like I want, find a 'good enough' one and write my way around it. >x>

Vaguely creepy. Yes. Yeeesss. It is. It just seems evocative of the . . . type of Uncle that gets a little too excited about inviting you to sit on his lap . . . .

Anyway, good tutorial Mugen. I'm sure you've helped a lot of people. That was a very nice breakdown of all the steps needed to be taken and considerations made to do this sort of thing.

His tutorial is made so that it's a parody of that kind of "creepy uncle". And I think that's why I find it funny and entertaining. I'd skip through tutorial videos just to find the section that is interesting, but in the case of Mugen's tutorial, somehow I totally watched it while laughing uncontrollably.
It's so exaggerated that you don't know why you're still watching yet continue because of the performance itself.

And there's also the fact that you actually learn something! Like all the steps to create shading in Photoshop using simple yet available tools.
