Do these chibi sprites fit in? >_<
I thought I had the brilliant idea of using chibis as sprite to add some moe-ness to the whole game atmosphere... However, now I'm not sure the idea is that brilliant after all...
What do you think? Do you think it's weird?
Attached a sample of how it'd look like... roughly.
Feedbacks are appreciated!! Thanks!

Well, they are really beautifully done images, but... it's awkward for me to imagine them in a visual novel. For one thing, there is the obvious clash with the background (I can't imagine how that girl's giant head would fit in that little bed) and the lack of shadows under their feet furthers the pasted-in look.
The other awkward thing to me is that chibi style is usually reserved for comedic moments, but the attention to detail in these chibi characters makes it look like a style I am supposed to take seriously. I am going to have a hard time crying during the sad scenes if the characters have that comical-looking "chibi cry" going on, and I won't be able to take them seriously if they are angry if they have cutesy I ARE MAD! chibi faces.
So, IMHO, I do think it is weird, but then again, I'm not a big fan of chibi style...

I personally find it a bit awkward, but only because it seems like it looks like they're standing inside the background.(Like its trying to be a part of the background)
It shouldn't be too much of a problem if you were to place them a bit to the sides so it seems like they're in front of the background.
But that's just how I see it.
They're wonderful images though.

The heads are the most overwhelming part, it might work if they were smaller.

Thanks for your inputs! I guess the census would be the chibis aren't such a bright idea after all >_<
I'll try to tweak around and see if there's any way I could use chibi sprites *sigh* (stubborn-ing lol)

The chibis themselves look great. I think the problem lies in their contrast with the background. If you simplified and chibi-fied the backgrounds as well then I think it would work much better.
The character sprites have to look like they live in the background world.

but the BGs are not really showing in those pics .
a BG like this clashes with chibis
P.S.: I like your chibis! ^_^

I know the BGs aren't showing too much, but the point is that they have been deformed and made cute like the chibi character. Sprite and environment styles should aesthetically match. A realistically proportioned background doesn't go well with chibi proportioned characters. "Cartooning" up the background would help the two styles mesh better.tuna_sushi wrote:AGREE! >.<LateWhiteRabbit wrote:The chibis themselves look great. I agree with LateWhiteRabbit, you just need a fitting background style wise. I like these chibis!
Though I hope the story is fairly comedic.

Thanks for the recommendation! I've already gotten over 100 backgrounds for this, so I'll probably change the sprite instead of the background

Re: Do these chibi sprites fit in? >_<
I think the point of chibis is really to look like "baby" forms of the characters. They can't fit into a normal background unless they're very small in comparison since giant chibis can be a little scary, though cute if used properly. I think the easiest way to use them is to create a CG with the chibis to show extreme expressions. You can still have moe and use loli-type proportions (think Lucky Star?). I certainly think it's possible to have a background with a chibi, but treat it like you would a child. Keep the proportions from the background similar to the chibis. Otherwise, it's so out of place, it's distracting.

Re: Do these chibi sprites fit in? >_<
My friend tweaked around with the chibis and suggested I do something like this...
What do you think now? Does it fit better, or is it still as mis-matched? Thanks!!

Thanks!
Coming from a pro artist such as yourself, I feel so much better! Relieved that there are still ways I could tweak around the chibis to fit them in!

Oh yes, that's much better. It looks really good! I'd play that.Nellie wrote:My friend tweaked around with the chibis and suggested I do something like this...

She's sun and rain: She's fire and ice. A little crazy, but it's nice.
