My concept art needs dissection
I thought it was about time I throw it to the wolves and get some feedback for some concept art that I'm working on. And I mean that in the nicest possible way :3
There are five obtainable characters; I'll keep adding to this post as I finish them I'll probably end up drawing MC-kun as well.
EDITEDITEDIT:
The Protagonist: The poor guy who's going to be the centre of the story.
EDITEDIT:
The Cop: This was drawn whilst under the influence, so I don't take any responsibility for crappiness, hidden penises or illegible words!
The Cop--she hates lies, liars and cheats. Will watch you for your own good.
EDIT:
The Guy: I'll be the first to admit that this is rushed to all hell--I won't make any excuses on my part.
A fan of the flamboyant, exotic, and the unusual, he is the only male of the main character's love interests.
The Brunette: I tried to emphasise both the antisocial and ocean read:shark-loving aspects of her; I may or may not have succeeded.
The Blonde: The breasts look like they're filled with silicon at the moment; currently working on making them natural mammaries.
The Redhead: Hoo boy, this was a doozy. Both practical and something you'd wear to a club? Before attempting this, I thought those two were pretty mutually exclusive--like, so mutually exclusive the Venn diagram would be three metres long, with the two circles on each side, refusing to look at each other. There's not way I'm getting both in one outfit, so I settled on the middle option; something you wouldn't wear in either situation! ;_;
For added bonus marks, try and guess who's the writer for this little project from the character descriptions alone.
Aaaaand that's it.

Re: My concept art needs dissection
I think they all look pretty good. Kinda hard to give much feedback till they're inked though. Only criticism I can see is that the redhead's shorts are so low they should be X rated, but thats fairly common. The characters all look unique and like some thought was put into them, hope to see them finished

Re: My concept art needs dissection
Wow, they all have super long legs! It makes their arms look tiny in comparison. Actually, I think they are too small, a hand spread out should be about the same size as the face. Is the brunette antisocial because she's shy or because she disdains society? If it's the latter, her head position is all wrong, she needs to look you in the eye or down her nose at you. Is she supposed to be wearing beach gear? If she's a shark fanatic a wet suit would be more appropriate. The long sleeve button up isn't really a look worn by someone who's at the beach a lot. I don't have anything to say about the blond except that I don't like the oversized bust look, but I'm a girl so that shouldn't be surprising. Anyone who's bigger than a c cup never go out without a bra, it just hurts too much! My more busty friends even sleep in a sports bra. The redhead also has a passive tilt to the head that doesn't fit her aggressive look. The gap look at the crotch is a pet peeve of mine, you have to be standing in a very specific way to get it so your thighs don't touch, and you have to be pretty skinny. To make the clothes look more like they could be good for clubbing or running, I'd make the pants into capris (skinny pants bind too much in weird places to be any good for running), unzip the hoodie and make the undershirt something more club like, maybe just a tank that has the right cut or shine. Textures, colors and jewelry are going to do the most to make this look right for both a club and a jog.
I hope this is the sort of critique you wanted! I think you have a nice art style, this looks very good!

Re: My concept art needs dissection
I personally don't have a problem with long legs but yeah, the arms look a bit small in comparison. That's the big thing that comes to mind when I look at the sketches.
The Redhead's jeans are... wow they are low ! Dangerously low to the point I wonder how they're not falling down.
Otherwise, can't say much. I'm no expert, just a hobbyist ^^'
Anyway, I'm going to become a fan at this rate

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
Disclaimer: I'm not much of a fan of large breasts and this is the first time I draw something like this, so it may be off ^^;
I think they look more natural now?
I also gave her wider hips. Big boobs + narrow hips usually doesn't look quite right to me (it may be just me, though).

Re: My concept art needs dissection
I agree with the idea that the legs are kind of fine even though they're long, the arms just need to be adjusted to match. On a normal body, the hands when hanging go to about midway down the thigh (or a bit further).

Re: My concept art needs dissection
I think this is an improvement over the original, but I think neither of the pictures take the clothes into consideration (in the full-body view). Looking at the fabric between the breasts, I instinctively feel the dress should pull the breasts up and together (a little like a bra, even if she isn't wearing one). The way the fabric stretches yet doesn't seem to affect the breasts makes it seem like the dress is made out of some super-elastic ultra-thin material.Deji wrote: I think they look more natural now?![]()

Just my two cents
EDIT: Oh, and I just noticed in the "both casual and clubbing"-clothes, the "ultra lowrise jeans" are REALLY low

Re: My concept art needs dissection
Thanks! These are just concept sketches--the actually sprites are probably going to be completely redrawn. I'm trying to get all the stupid and obvious mistakes I usually make ironed out, plus getting the designs consistent :3 I may have overdone the jeans a little; I'll probably scale it back.buprettyinpink wrote:I think they all look pretty good. They do have super long legs! I exaggerated the "legs start halfway done the body" rule, mostly to see if it made them look a little modelesque. Didn't really work. Also, I don't know if it's just me, but I've noticed hands seem to fluctuate on anime girls; sometimes they're the right size, other times they're really small. I wanted to see if it made a difference, making them smaller than life. Apperently it's too noticeable D:
I have no idea why she's antisocial, so I can't really answer that, sorry :\ Hey, I work with what I'm given
I honestly don't know if the author meant the shark thing as a joke or not :3 Believe it or not, I tried a wetsuit first--the look made her really sporty looking, and my personal perference went with a bikini even if it doesn't make much sense
Also, I styled the jacket off of the Australian life savers--is it really not something worn very often? That makes me sad, I thought they looked awesome
No bra is a plot point :3
Dat gap look--I know it's not very realistic, but I'm playing fast and loose with human anatomy right now, and what I got what I was trying to convey across, I hope that sounds really, really bad D:
I added the head tilt to give a little bit more character to her pose makes her look a little more ineffectual, also a plot point :3. I can't stand how static a pose looks when the head is held straight. One of my pet peeves, haha. I can't draw a head held straight.
Also, my prompt was "urban exploration". Not exactly running, per se, but more of practical clothing that was comfortable and unintrusive. Still have no idea how to match those.
Is that what people wear in clubs? It sounds so...ghetto? I've always thought it was more little black dress, stilleto heels, and small handbags. Low rise jeans were the only pants I could think of that would be worn to a club. It seems I have much to learn ;_;

I did have the fabric hanging loose between the breasts, but that looks really tacky, and pretty distracting seeing all those folds. I wanted to emphasise her lack of a bra still, so I do what I usually do--completely ignore reality :\ When the breasts were pushed together, you could hardly tell she wasn't wearing a bra to begin with--I spent a good hour trying to get those two to work togther.rasburn wrote: I think this is an improvement over the original, but I think neither of the pictures take the clothes into consideration (in the full-body view). Just my two centsOther than that (and the slightly-too-long legs), I'm really impressed by your drawing style and quality Awedacious (sooo much better than me).
EDIT: Oh, and I just noticed in the "both casual and clubbing"-clothes, the "ultra lowrise jeans" are REALLY lowI'm not sure it would be practical to wear those pants (they might fall off at any minute. I also think that the belly button is a bit high. Generally with clothes that leave the belly exposed the belly button tend to be closer to the pants than the top. This is not a rule, but I think maybe the belly button should be slightly lower (or are the jeans fooling me?).
I think the belly button looks about right to me--the jeans must be getting to you :3 Tape and magic

I keep thinking the redhead's bellybutton is really high, but after looking at it for awhile, I think it's just the superlong torso + those pants.
Either that girl is really brave, has a high pain tolerance, or just doesn't move. Ever.
Anyhow, I love your style, and I think it's beautiful.

Oh, it's a windbreaker! I thought it was some cotton shirt. Windbreakers are just fine. ^_^ As for what's worn in clubs I don't actually know, I don't ever go clubbing. *^^*; I have vague notions on what's worn from TV and what I can find on google.

Eh, I wouldn't say it hurts so much as it's just uncomfortable to have them flying everywhere. xD
Also, I could see her not wearing a bra if the garment itself has a bra built into it. U:

I was afraid of this, haha. I said to myself as I was drawing, "Oh boy, am I gonna get a lot flak for this or what?"
The pants, too. Super low rise is a bit too distracting D:
I kind of just made up ideas from my own experience, which is pretty limited too except for Signapore, but that's an entirely different story--maybe it's a local thing. I think it still needs work, though >>;
When drawing fabric, always pay mind to the TENSION. In the case of loose breasts, the natural point of tension would be the nipples. Then you have to think where is this fabric "attached" to, as in where are the other places "pulling" this fabric (because it's not loosely falling on top of the breasts
And yes, the clothes, unless very very loose, *should* contain some of the volume of the breasts and flatten them a bit towards the body, pulling them up a bit, and making them seem bigger from the front but less prominent from the profile (because the fat of the breast is being redistributed!).
Hope that helps (:
