Creative Commons Sprites; yes or no?

#1 Post by Anna » Thu Oct 25, 2012 7:56 am

Because I need to warm up before I can really start drawing, I was thinking of making some very simple (1-pose only with several expressions) creative commons sprites in the mornings. However, is there any demand for it? I thought it might be useful for people who want to do some practice projects first or who need a small side character. What do you think?

I'll draw them on a 1920x1080 canvas (though I won't use all that space) so you can resize them however you like. The sprites would be all kinds of people too (old, young, cute, tough etc).

Here's an example of something I was doodling right now (ignore the background colour):

So... good idea or a waste of time?

Well, I love your art, so for the sake of seeing more of your art I'd be all game for it. :-P

I think most people shy away from free assets because they need a full set for a large cast and getting sprites from a large pool of different art styles would look... bad. I have a few games that have only 1 or 2 characters, but they need to be a specific age group (young girl, young adult male, etc.). A lot of the times most of the free sprites only a school uniform too.

So in other words, as long as it isn't another sprite drawn for a school-themed game I'd be all over that >_> It'd be great to have some variety.

Yeah, that's why I was wondering. I would keep them in the same style though, and they would vary a lot. I'm not going to draw high school people, because I already drew some and I think there are enough free sprites for those already.

Your art is really cute, so I think a lot of people would be grateful to you ;)

Maybe you could just draw them "naked" and add a set of clothes? (though that might be asking a bit much... )
really though, If you permit people to modify it, there might also be some artist that areN#t confident in their proportions yet, but can colour it well enough?.....

Buah, I'm rambling ;)
But as I said, I bet it'll be popular anyways ;)
It is only when you stop looking for nowhere that you find that such a place exists. It hides within a small stitch in time between here and there, a grain of sand trapped within eternity, forever suspended within that moment of existence.

Ooh, so like the 'nude' body on one layer and the clothing on the layer above it? All right, that's not a problem, I'll just post the .psd files along with the normal zip then. Also, I wouldn't mind it if people adjusted anything about the sprites, so that's fine too.

Let me see... good art, resizeable, multiple expressions...

Why would anyone not answer yes?

Cute! I always love to see free sprites for us art-starved writers  I would also recomend that rather than making several different expressions, you could put different facial features on their own layers. A few different mouths to choose from, a few different eyes, eyebrows etc. That way it's possible to mix and match, so you suddenly get a huge variety of expressions out of a small amount of resources.

Copy/paste makes that redundant.

Haha, I thought people might not want them because they have one pose or because the art style would vary from other sprites.

Well that's a bit too annoying for me to do because it increases my layers by a lot ^^;. I'm planning on having several expressions and the body and clothes on separate layers (keeping colouring on another layer too of course), so you can just adjust or add whatever you like yourself right?

For small project it would surely be welcome : look at CC free music that everybody use, even for larger projects sometimes !
Someone mentionned how free sprites wouldn't be used a lot because people need a large a cast and want to have all the sprites from the same style.. but it's the same with free music after all, which is often used from really differents composers & styles so it'd logically not be an issue for these projects.

I'm all for free sprites, because, to be frank, it's hard to make sprites. Especially if you can only draw traditionally. It's a hassle, trust me, because I tried. ._. Also, loving your cute art.

Of course we would like that!
Who wouldn't?
And just like Nekobiker said, art-starved writers will love that.
It is a lifesaver for everyone who are not exactly an artist. Like me.

After a bit of a delay, I finished the first sprite :D! They will be posted here from now on: http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... 52&t=18268

Also, I decided not to do the body and clothing separate after all, because it kind of defeats the purpose of simple and quick to do warm-up sprites. I still drew her body, but at least it was good practice XD.

I'm sure there are a lot of newbie VN writers without access to an artist who would fight for the chance to get a hold of some of your sprites. I say go for it.
The best reason to get up in the morning is to outdo yourself: to do it better than you've ever done it before. But if you haven't done it better by nightfall... look at your globe and pick a spot: it's always morning somewhere.
