How to draw blood?

#1 Post by thedarkdefender » Sat Nov 03, 2012 1:23 am

I was just wondering how to you draw blood for a visual novel?
Or how ... just how do I put blood?

First off, awesome Adventure Time avy.
Second. I don't tend to draw blood, but when I see it drawn, it's normally a slightly saturated bright red for msot of it, with some white highlights here and there and a darker more burgundy red to make it look more shiny. Almost like how you'd draw water droplets, but y'know... red.
Hope it helped a little bit.

An excellent technique for blood spatters with traditional media is to use black ink (for black and white drawings) or red acrylic paint (for color work), diluted with water to your liking. You can flick the pigments at the paper and achieve a wonderful blood spattering (hm, that doesn't sound so good). It tends to be a little imprecise, but hey... it's a blood spatter...

by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride
and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past."

The beauty of life is, while we cannot undo what is done,
we can see it, understand it, learn from it and change.

but in wisdom, understanding and love.

I guess I'm the only one that researches real life wounds and crime scenes for her blood needs... >>; *feels creepy*

Anyway, looking for "blood stained" and the object you need stained would give you rather safe photographic results for reference (:

well, normally I just use my knowlege of liquids and a loose consideration for how blood dries. There was one time when I wanted to draw piles of mutilated body parts for a drawing in class (as a buffet table for mythical creatures), so I asked a friend who was nearby to look up "mutilated corpse" on google images. I'm still not sure if that image was real...

I'm pretty sure most people don't have a firm grasp of how blood actually behaves, so you only really need to satisfy yourself on how realistic it is. really, you just need a striking enough color (hence why really dark black is so often used) along with context and some spikiness if it's moving.

Some blood quick studies for your pleasure :P

The more fresh, the brighter the red. The thicker the amount, the darker (like wine). When it's thinner or diluted it looks pink. When dried, it turns brown.
Blood is thicker than water, btw! :P

This also may be helpful: http://www.crimescene-forensics.com/Cri ... tains.html (nothing graphic! only drawings and photographs of drops and stains.
And for how fresh blood looks on a face... google nosebleed! :P

I sometimes do research from tv shows with crime scenes and murderers.
I get too amazed by the sight of blood though so I can't really concentrate. I feel like a big time weirdo :(
