How do I outline my drawing after scanning?

#1 Post by WolfHunner » Sun Dec 23, 2012 7:20 pm

How do I outline and fine tune my drawing after scanning?
This is some old work I did.
Image
Basically what I did was outline the drawing with pen after drawing it with pencil.
Then I scan it.
Open up Photoshop and use my tablet to outline it again on one layer then color it on another layer.
So I hit 'multiply' then go over the line art.
Image
The problem Is you can see it comes out all jagged.
How can I make my line art smoother?

Well there are a number of ways that it can be done the easiest would be either a Graphics Tablet or using a "Inking/Vectoring" program like Paintool Sai or inkscape to move and adjust lines over the art work

the OTHER option is using a program like gimp or Photoshop and wash over the lines in black. THEN slowly erasing the overlap until you get the result you are looking for. (Gimp and PS can do vectors but they are a total pain in the bottom)

You can find all these programs online but Gimp/Inkscape are free. If you Google/Youtube them you can find plenty of tutorials.

The lines look your tablet driver isn't installed properly. Install SAI and doodle some lines. It must smooth if the driver is properly installed, but ugly if not.
When you install a tablet drive, it's necessary to uninstall an old driver before the new one.

If you keep lines clean enough when drawing, you could even get away with adjusting the levels in Photoshop and get a nice outline. A god thing is to draw on a clean white paper, you never know what use you might end giving to the original drawing even if you plan to outline it.

I always sucked at inking, so that’s what I do, and I prefer to color directly over the pencils anyway. I like the original trace to stay visible, but that’s not what you where asking.

If you really want a clean digital inking, I recommend Manga Studio. It has some tools specificaly made for this, to fix movement caused by the pulse and to give different width to the line while drawing.
As I said, I always sucked at inking, but I made this the first time I touched Manga Studio 4 Debut.

Vectors work, but it can get boring (at least for me).

Have you tried with real ink the traditional way? Maybe you’d do a lot better than me. I did tried! -.-
