How do you draw your Backgrounds

#1 Post by DragonSilhouette » Sun May 19, 2013 5:49 am

I'm pretty terrible at doing these, every time I try I fail quite badly. I was wondering how do the rest of the LSF artist do their BGs.

Oh wow I've seen your art before! I'm pretty sure I'm also watching you, thanks for the link I've never seen your newer BG tutorial before.

I use Wings3d or Sketchup and just draw it from them. Another good way is to just get yourself a Cheap Picture frame and stick it to a cheap tripod. Then draw what you see in it. Lastly you can just draw it.

I use Blender to model & render my stuff. Freestyle was finally integrated into the latest build too, so I render the line art with that. The advantage with 3D is that you can just spin the camera around and render another view immediately after the first. As long as you modelled beyond the camera's direct view, it takes little extra work. The actual process is pretty similar to what Aura listed, with some things moved around / omitted / added:
  • Research > rough floor plan / concept (on paper or in Photoshop) > block out in 3D app > model everything > materials / textures / shaders / line art > camera position / orientation > lighting > render > compositing > post editing in Photoshop
I didn't include "guides", even though I use them because once you create them, they don't need to be recreated. My default settings use metric units and I've created an adult human as a scale reference to maintain consistency between things. Also there's animation... I didn't include that.

My friend actually makes the linework to my project, and I'm the one who inks and colors it. Some people are better at composition than others. Also, as a 'rule of thirds', one tip would be to never make the corner of the room straight in the center of the page.
