How do I create a sprite?

I'm new and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to make a sprite,
I would prefer to use a free program to do this.

Are you looking for a program to make your own sprites from scratch, like gimp or paint.net, or are you after something akin to a character generator?

You should at least have a drawing program like Sai or Photoshop.

It depend on talent not on program. But I recommened Sai for beginner. Photoshop is more complicate and it's not the best to start with if you just know how to drawing on computer.

Instead of getting used to SAI and then having the trial expire on you, you can try free alternatives like FireAlpaca. There's a full list of art programs and the websites you can download them from at the EVN wiki as well.
