Hand drawn Art Vs Digital Art. Advice Please?

#1 Post by Everning » Mon Aug 19, 2013 9:18 am

:D
Hello~
and Welcome!

Okay.. I have a question and I kind of need your advice. If I were to make a visual novel, which should you think I should go for- hand drawn or digital? That applies to sprites and backgrounds.

If hand drawn. How do you think I should go about it? And what programs do you think I should use to edit it? (Something free and legal) What is the advantage of hand drawn art?

If digital, Well kind of the same question. Do you think I can use my iPad to draw the sprites and port it to the computer?

I prefer to draw on paper and when I try drawing on computer and iPad and so on, it feels very weird. Any way to ease this problem?

Thank you !

Hmm... I really like digital art, there's no doubt in that.
But, if you don't feel comfortable drawing with the computer, you can always draw on paper, take a picture of it, put it onto your computer, and trace it (line art) using a program such as Gimp, Photoshop, SAI, etc - or of course, you can scan it. Or just like you said, you can draw on your iPad and then port it to your computer. It's easy.
...and obviously coloring in would look better if it's done on the computer, but that's just my opinion though.
After all, that's what I do with my art nearly all the time (since I find drawing on a tablet annoying and my hands are shaky...)
Hope I have helped :)

There are tutorials to convert your scanned art into clean line art, which you can then color on your computer.

There is no real advantage to hand drawn art besides being of a higher quality if you are better at drawing by hand. You will have to clean it up digitally before using it in a game.

That's right, you could do both!
At first draw everything on paper (sprites, ...), and then use a software to edit it, color it and make the variations! That's what I do since I don't have a tablet, and I'm rather satisfied with it (until now). But It still takes quite some time to edit/color everything, so I can understand if you still hesitate ^^;
I don't think doing everything traditionaly is a good idea, especially if you don't have a good material to do it and it would still look a bit strange in a VN, but if you don't feel like drawing directly on a computer/Ipad, then just do as said previously!

Personally, I prefer drawing manually then cleaning/coloring digitally.

Aww... Thank you, you guys. You really help me out a lot. I am more comfortable with drawing with my hands but I will try to combine the two. I promise I will practice till I am good enough ... :)

I wish you good luck (and I think you're already really good @.@ I really like your drawing, it gives a soft feeling and the clothes are well drawn)

You can also experiment with layers on whatever program you are using ((except paint since it doesn't have any)) if you are using Photoshop, using multiply on layers helps.
