Help! Making clean PNGs
Hi, I'm not sure if this is in the proper section but... Anyway, here it goes!
I'm having problems with the sprites my artist is sending me. Even though she is trying to send them with a blank background, every time I open them I get the basic white background. I have tried to get it clean but I keep getting fuzzy edges. Is the only way to clean them erase the background bit by bit?
Side note: I don't have photoshop. All I have is paint.NET and SAI

This is more of an art problem than it is a RenPy thing, so I can give some input. First off, is 454x570 the original resolution of the sprite? If so, than your artist is drawing at too low of a resolution making the line quality suffer. Is your artist drawing on a blank background and what program is she using?

Re: Help! Making clean PNGs
Haven't tried Paint.NET, but SAI doesn't have support showing a 'transparency indicator' i.e. the checkerboard on Photoshop. Instead, all you get is a blank white canvas.
Seems like your artist did not use layers? You get those artifacts when you erase the background from a drawing at least in my case, so I think consulting with your sprite artist about this is the only way, unless you want to manually erase those edges.

@MaiMai
I can have the thread moved if need be. I originally posted it in the art section but thought that it could be in the question section... I'm sorry.
Anyway, to give you a proper response the original image was 1700x2338 (I've added it as an attachment.) The resizing was done by me in order to make the sprite fit my game resolution of 600x800.
I don't know what program my artist used. She is on a small vacation so I guess I just have to wait until she gets back...

Is this better?
I got the lines out in Paint.net.
Though, I kind of cheated doing so.

Re: Help! Making clean PNGs
It seems that the artist is not actually sending you transparent images. A transparent PNG should have no background, not a white background. Maybe they made a mistake in the saving process or left a layer in. The image in the above post is what it SHOULD look like.

Re: Help! Making clean PNGs
Try the grim color reaper plugin for paint.NET.
You should tell your artist to work on a transparent layer to avoid this problem. When painting with transparent pixels, if the background isn't transparent the pixel will merge with the background creating this annoying effect.

Re: Help! Making clean PNGs
I use Corel and find that when I save as a png I need to have a mask on the rest of the picture to get the transparent background. Otherwise when I open it, it will be against a white background.
