Can you color this lineart for Learning Reference

#1 Post by johnstag123 » Sat Dec 21, 2013 3:16 am

(Basically, I'm not sure if this is in the right thread. If its wrong I'm sorry :( Could you forward it to the right thread for me or give me a heads up as to where to put it. Thanks :D  )

Hello, I'm basically making BG's and I managed to learn about perspectives, shading, inking. etc and made my first line art. The problem is I also want to learn how to color Bg. I opened tutorials and I managed to learned quite a few. I was wondering if anyone could color this lineart vn'ish or anime'ish like(Just the way you color it). This is not for any game but for learning reference. :D

I also searched online for Bg in terms of coloring and reference, but I also want this line art specifically colored. Thanks, you'll be a really great help.

May you also tell me what software you used to color the bg and maybe some pointers on how you colored it. :D

My trial colored Bg is in the attachments.

This is the line art:

(This lineart is not mine, but belongs to willow yanagi. I just want to practice coloring it. :D)

I don't have my tablet, so excuse the very bad coloration, it is only for learning purposes anyway.

The biggest issue that I have with your picture is: Where is the source?
What is your light source.

From design I would say, it is the window (I can't see any lights and your colored picture also doesn't hint on a working ceiling lamp), but the carpet, the walls, everything defies that.
It is all nice and good, if you know the process of shading, but it is useless, if your carpet can actually glow and is not inflicted by shadows from the things around it.
If the light comes from the window, then all shadows have to follow it.
The window and the wall with the window would be the darkest places since the light comes from there (look at your own room, it really helps). All objects would have a shadow that moves away from the light (if the light comes from left, then the shadow goes to the right). Of course, rooms have their limits and also light has its limit. If the sun is not directly shining through the window, then the light will become weaker the further away the wall is from the window.
Mirrors CAN be a source of indirect light as they reflect the light. So if you would have a table mirror, a glass vase or something, then they would throw a reflection on the table they stand on.

I would strongly advise you to take a few deep looks into some tutorials about basic shadows and perspective drawing:

Thanks for the tip, I am currently reading the site you mentioned above. :D

Your example should give me a better overview of shadows and lighting.

I'm also looking for other examples in terms of coloring to make the line art above look for animeish like. :D
