Help w/ setting up commissions page?

#1 Post by catgame21234 »

I can't quite do it today or this week (finals) but I was wondering exactly what type of work should I show off? I do a lot of different type of art but i love working with characters.
I can figure out pricing and all that I just don't know what to present too others.

Examples of my most recent noteworthy work

Art school has been bending me over backwards so I haven't had enough time to make stuff that I'd want to shove online. I'm opening to making sample work just for the sake to show to others. I am just wondering how much is "enough".

What would you guys personally would like to see on someone's commission page?
I know there are like a guide stickyed to this thread but I wouldn't mind to hear generally what do other people look in when they're looking at a commission page.

Please and thank you in advance guys. The butterflies are flying so hard in my gut right now.

Generally, what buyer would expect from a commission page is simply the type of commission offered and it's price. That, put in a clean layout, will be good enough for people who browse your commission. Information about how and where to contact you is also a must, and if you have a waitlist, you would want to put that somewhere in your commission page too. Some artist write their term of service, while some people just let the buyer do whatever they want with the art they paid, it's your call.

Since you asked about what type of work that you should show, I suggest pick the cleanest, most finished work that you have. I usually don't suggest sketch to be offered as commission unless your sketch is clean enough to look like it's an almost finished work. Remember that commission page is a bit different than portfolio page. You can put sketches or wips in your portfolio (as long as they're clean) but not in the commission page since people will most likely only care about your finished work.

It also won't hurt to know what kind of commission you want to do from the start. Is it character design? Or maybe full illustration? And after knowing what you want, you can start polishing your portfolio and focus your service around it.

I agree with Morinoir about sketches. If I see sketches on a commission page then I think " This person has hardly ever finished a drawing.". I'd also like to see evidence of technical ability (hands, hair, drapery, proper shading, etc.), different characters (male, female, child, old, young, etc.), a range of expressions.

A pet peeve of mine is drawings which go all out on photoshop special effects (lens flares, complex gradients, etc.). It's like hitting a single note on a guitar with the shimmer effect fully engaged. It sounds incredibly beautiful and ambient but if you unplug the effect then there's nothing at all.

This is exactly what I needed. Thank you both of you cause now I can get a head start on it. I always got the two mixed up.

I'll never forget what one of my future professors from my first year at uni told me what that process is called.

It's called "filter f*cking". I still don't know if that is the proper professional terminology but I will make it one if it isn't. You are not the only one with that hate.
