(UPDATED) How much is my coloring style worth and which style would you prefer?

#1 Post by yingoring » Tue Feb 04, 2020 4:46 am

Hello, please redirect this forum if I've misplaced it! Thank you and apologies in advance if I really made a mistake.

Please do disregard the messy line art and the fact that it's just a head shot first, I want to tackle my coloring for this thread.

As per the title, I want to know from you, from the perspective of a buyer (and not from an creator's perspective):

1. How much would you pay for this kind of styles? (I can usually do clean line art+full body+designs, but I wanted to try different coloring styles and ask for more opinions before I do something fuller with any of these coloring styles.)

2. Which coloring style do you prefer? (And what you like/don't like or what you think about each style?)

I'm trying to open commissions and if I go with the style on the left, I'd charge $3 while $6 for the one on the right. (Do assume that both have cleaner lines and are head shots!)

Feel free to give critique as well, I really want to improve because I feel demotivated from my current skills...any form of feedbacks/compliments would greatly help with my self-confidence too! If you think I'm not fit for doing commissions or have any thoughts that are not exactly positive, do let me know too. Feel free to let me know if my coloring/art style itself isn't marketable too or if it is!

Left style seems like soft light, which is more common. Right style is harsh light, like they are on a stage with a spot light on them. Characters should look like they are affected by the light in the particular setting, it is a matter of knowing when to use each style.

Sunny days are also more harsh, where as cloudy days have more of a softer light, but these things rarely get considered in VNs as people want to minimize the amount of necessary sprites.

I also prefer the left image. The prices that you list are for head shots or full body prices? Are the prices for line art and color or only color?

@ComputerArt.Club

thank you for replying!! I'll take what you said with consideration. My issue with these two styles is that the one on the left is actually much easier for me to draw (without costing me my wrist) but I know that the right style is prettier for some other people too. Although you mentioned that it's different lighting and context, the effort needed to draw each actually differs a lot from my side :c so I'm conflicted on which style to focus on and to get better in. I can definitely work on both style simultaneously, but I do want to know which style is more marketable for the general public, e.g. which style would actually fulfill what others would like to see their characters in?

Thank you for stating your preference! The prices I listed are for head shots like I showed, probably not line art but will be clean lines (much cleaner than the current one). I haven't actually planned anything solid on doing commissions because I personally feel like I need to practice a little more, but some of my friends mentioned that they wanted to commission me so I wanted more feedback from netizens/experienced people first.

I actually quite like both styles. Your art is good, so I think you could sell your art using either style. In that case, you should go with the one you prefer/the one that is easier on your body! Good luck. (:

your work is good and certainly worth more than $3-$6. Portrait like that should be priced $20 at least, and even more if you put more time on cleaning the line art and rendering.
Looking at the face structure, you already grasp the foundation. Keep drawing and you'll get used to facial anatomy very soon. As for the coloring, the first image feels rough and unfinished. When you do shading with one color, I say it's best if you pair it with clean line art. While on the second image, it's okay to keep things messier because the coloring itself is more dynamic and feels more like painting than drawing. Just make sure to consider where the light comes from and where it casts shadows.

@Zelan
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! :D I'll take that into consideration, but currently I think I will try to develop both styles (if my learning capabilities somehow manage it) because if my flat shading style looks good enough, I can price it significantly lower than the painted one so if anyone is interested enough to want my art (if I ever get that honour some day), they can get it for cheaper! :) Gonna practice more ahahaha

@morinoir
I'm currently lining another headshot so that I can try coloring it with both styles again, which I will then update/bump this thread with that by then. If you happen to be here again to see it, I hope you can weigh the price-to-quality of the art at that time! Thank you so much for taking your time to read and reply to my thread :D

Since you're asking for critique in a visual novel development forum, maybe I can help you narrow down what people here are interested in seriously purchasing;

1) Full-body character sprites, with exchangeable clothes and facial expressions. Your lefthand style is better suited to sprites.
Character sprites are usually priced at $50-90.

2) CGs. As ComputerArt.Club suggested, your harsh light style can be used for a character lit by a spotlight or sunny day. So, your righthand style can be suited to CGs.
Since CGs usually incorporate backgrounds, action, or interesting angles, they cost more than sprites and can range anywhere between $60-200.

If you really want to market your art to the game dev community, I recommend you focus on working towards these two major art assets. Hopefully this gives you a little more direction.
Have confidence. Let go of perfectionism. I love you!

whoaa that's some good portrait you made there! Well done! My favorite is definitely the left image. The right image's color feels murky because you use greyish green for secondary shading color and I also found that the character's eyes are clearer on the left image. I'm guessing you used green because you want to match the color with his eyes, but I suggest for skin, use purple instead (unless the dark murky feeling is what you're aiming for).

(Went ahead and applied purple to your drawing. Hope you don't mind.)

As for the price, I think you can even price it at $30 for this kind of portrait. I would love to see you draw the body next time. Keep practicing and good luck with the commission!
