How many GUI elements in a project?

#1 Post by NATO »

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but I'm currently planning & budgeting my visual novel project and I'm wondering around about how many GUI elements there are in a standard renpy VN?

I want to commision all original elements for my VN and I'll be counting exactly how many the project will actually need before approaching any designers, but I need a ballpark figure to work off for the moment.

Thanks

I know "it depends" is a gross answer that doesn't help- but it's really true. You can change the base GUI into a custom GUI with just a few assets and changing the built-in GUI's colors into your custom color palette. It can range wildly, but here are two examples:

An example "light" GUI asset list:
-Game Logo
-Main Menu screen
-Button image idle variant (for choices and menu buttons)
-Button image hover variant
-A font (something you or the GUI artist pick) for the GUI text
-A font for the story text
-Text box
-Name box

An example "intensive" GUI asset list:
-Game Logo
-Studio/Team Logo
-Main menu foreground and variants (lots of games have different main menus depending on your progress in the game)
-Main menu background animation
-GUI buttons idle/hover/selected variants
-GUI buttons badge idle/hover/selected variants
-Choice buttons idle/hover variants
-Choice button badge idle/hover variants
-Text box
-Name box
-Calendar display
-GUI option sliders
-Horizontal/Vertical scroll bars
-Click to Continue image or animation
-Cursor
-Window icon
-Gallery menu
-Gallery image frame idle/hover variants
-In-Game menu buttons idle/hover variants
-Options menu
-GUI font(s)
-Story font
-Mini-game GUIs
-NVL
-Achievements menu
-Achievement images
-Promotional images

Obviously this list isn't exhaustive of what you could do, but it's all I could think off when running through my WIP's GUI. You also don't NEED any of them. It really depends on what you're going for. But I hope this helped at least a little? I know when I started I was confused and daunted by what I needed and a list like this might have made things more concrete.
