How should I make my game art.

#1 Post by Axaras »

Hello :D ,

First of all, I'm a COMPLETE noob when it comes to creating novels and I've been only researching for just a few days now.

Please try to be understanding with the next questions, documentation about novel making tips/ways seem to be pretty diffuse so I decided to make this post.

I'm and always have been a regular visual novel consumer (Higurashi, Steins;Gate, MuvLuv, Umineko, Dies Irae, some Rance, large etc) but recently I got into Western 3D erotics VNs (Sisterly Lust, Dreams of Desire, Summer with Mia, Light of my Life, Lust Epidemic, Treasure of Nadia, DIK, tiny etc). I've liked what I've played so far and I feel kinda inspired to make my own novel. I consider myself good at plotting/writing and RenPy code seems easy enough for beginners. In addition, I'm studying programming, so it won't be a problem.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same about my 3D modeling skills (I have ZERO idea) and to be honest, I think getting quality art for a "supposed" game is pretty important.

The icing on the cake comes with the fact that I'm not able to spend any money right now (I don't think I would 'cause my current noob condition). So I guess all my models should be done with FREE software/accessories. My researching has led me to some 3D programs that could be handy

The software I'm testing right now is:

Sweet Home 3D: This is the software I'm more pleased with although the general model quality seems to be quite bad.

Daz3D Home:I think I should have chosen Pro version, but I don't really know what to do with the program since I need to pay for assets.

MakeHuman:I tested some male and female bodies but again, the model quality seems to be pretty bad.

Blender: I haven't even started it yet. I don't really know what I'll be using this for (yet).

Can someone recommend me software? If this is enough, what should I do to make models look good? I KNOW reaching professional polishment may need professional software (completely out of my league rn, not even considering)

Finally, here comes the huge noob question:

How am I supposed to make backgrounds? And I'm refering to characters and surroundings implemented together (scenes?). My initial supposition: 1. I make character model using X program 2. I make background model using Y program 3. I unificate 'em using Blender. 4. I make a screenshot??? 5. Supposedly, images have to be rendered???

Woah I've been writing for quite a while now...

Please feel free to ask any doubts about language usage, there may be some mistakes since I'm not that good at english writing.

I appreciate advices, links, or any contribution :) .

It took me over two years to learn how to make even 'barely passable' 3D art using DAZ. Your experience may be different.
Here are some good sources of free 3D assets for DAZ
http://www.sharecg.com/
https://www.renderosity.com/
https://www.daz3d.com/
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/categories/freebies
https://www.most-digital-creations.com/freestuff.htm

3D art isn't as widely accepted here as is 2D art. Based on the titles of Visual novels that you like, you might want to check out the-new-lagoon.com for advice on using 3D art to make visual novels.
Some of my visual novels are at http://www.the-new-lagoon.com. They are NSFW
Poorly done hand-drawn art is still poorly done art. Be a Poser (or better yet, use DAZ Studio 3D) - dare to be different.

Thanks, I'll be checking the sources and the forum.
