Good resources for writing a story?

#1 Post by daffodilistic »

Hi all,

Looking through this board, it looks like most of the posts are about artwork and music, and not much on writing :( are there any resources I can read up on how to write a VN?

Writing a visual novel is pretty similar to writing any other work, it's just that you don't have to write out as much description (the visuals do that for you) and if you're not doing a kinetic VN, you have to plan out multiple endings and story branches. When it comes to plain 'ol writing articles, I like reading the stuff on Fuel Your Writing and Ookami Kasumi's writing tips.

Does anyone have any good ideas for places to go online for advice, ideas, and help in writing a fantasy novel?
I agree with writing the story inside you... but it would be good if someone could instruct me on how to make that story actually salable :

@jyrte47: I think what you need is an experienced editor, an experienced co-writer and proof reader. But it'll be hard to make them join you if you have nothing to show them that your project is gonna be a really big and successful thing. If you want to hire, then that's a different story.
I don't know what link to find help in writing a fantasy novel, but here too, there are many talented writers ^^ and they're so nice, so I guess you might want to search from this forum too XP (don't really expect it, because they usually are already full)
You are bigger than what you think but smaller than you can imagine.

this might help you like on tips to writing a fantasy novel but if you get stuck on something this could help

http://nine.frenchboys.net/ and http://www.seventhsanctum.com/

those sites are actually pretty good for any type of story. it has all kinda of interesting generators to help you get started or help you when you are stuck. names, cities, clothing, character profiles, etc.... so its worth a look at least.

Tvtropes could either help you or ruin your life.

http://tvtropes.org

It's pretty much a database on all types of tropes and techniques used in... well... everything! The atmosphere is pretty lax but if something isn't being used to it's full potential, be it a character's role in a story or a plot line that is slowly becoming crooked, the users are sure to point it out. It's somewhat easier to write once you get your mind set up to think in tropes, seeing the individual trees in the forest, y'know?

Thank you for all of the links, guys! It's always nice to find helpful resources. I can share http://www.fictionfactor.com/ and http://www.writing-world.com/index.shtml

(God, reading through all of these sites is sure going to be time-consuming.)

On another note, @Rhonos: You mean TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Life? Or maybe TV Tropes Will Enhance Your Life?
