What is your specialized genre?

#1 Post by uselessp »

Ahem. As you can see, I wonder what kind of genre in story everyone is skillful at? Particularly those who use two opposite themes such as sci-fi combined with fantasy.

For me, it seems like fantasy has been a part of my life. As magical things fascinated me, and miracles of fortune are like my belief that this world isn't as cruel as it seemed to be. And I can handle almost all sub-themes if the main theme is fantasy.

But my weakness is school-life comedy, sci-fi, and pure love. I know that sounds stupid as I myself have hobby of plastic models as well weapons. But I just.... don't get the sense of jokes, and romance (Sorry. I'm not actually sociable outside and inexperienced in love).

Sure, people said that 'you don't need to actually in love to write a romance story,' but I most of the times thought that real experience of being in love gives more ideas for the story. And I'm not good enough to stick tiny bits of detail of chemical formulas into my brain.

So... What is your specialty and weakness in story making? And also, can someone teach me about school-life comedy's appeal to get good laughter even to myself? I always created one, but somehow the genre shifted to a darker plot so quick.

I wish to make a vn with simple, acceptable, easy to undertsand and standard quality of school-life comedy.

Genre? Sometimes I get them wrong...
- But I specialized (or rather, think I'm good at) in slice-of-life in modern (present) day setting.
- I think I'm pretty good with comedy though I never know if they're actually ever able to make people laugh.
- And I'm definitely specialized in moe and lolies (they're not genre, I know).
- I'm also pretty good at drawing and designing mecha but never a sci-fi one.

My weakness would be symbolism. I can't take and understand them at all. I'm also suck at politics.

School slice of life comedy hot-blooded battling hardcore erotic yuri. XD
I don't know what is my genre lol

Though, I honestly think writing comedy is the most important skill. You can learn plotting easily, but not humor.

I'm not skillful to say this mater, but at least I know the fundamental. Remember when you laughed, and laugh while you're writing. I think this is requirements. If I can't laugh at my writing, anyone might not laugh at it.

The Suspense genre is the one I know well and one I've had the most practice in. So I guess that's my 'skill'

So... What is your specialty and weakness in story making?

Not sure if I really have a specialty... There's genres I'm more comfortable with writing though... ^^;

I like writing fantasy (magic, armor, knights~), slice-of-life with a small twist to keep it interesting (urban fantasy, etc)... Maybe light-hearted stuff - I'm not sure if I can fall into the comedy part, I've never had a good sense of humour.

Romances I enjoy doing, but I'm better with platonic since I can't grasp/understand lust/sexual attraction. So I'm always worried it'd be obvious...

If I had to say weakness, I say sci-fi (since I end up just researching everything and wanting to understand it...), or anything dark/morbid. I can touch upon some dark stuff, but I don't know if I can properly convey tragedy or sorrow strongly.

As for school comedy - just reflect on scenes that made *you* laugh. If there's nothing, then jot down something if something makes you laugh the next time you see family/friends. Whenever I visit my BF's family, or mine,, all of their stories are hilarious and I regret never jotting down them all for future ideas. >.< Maybe it was a one-line delivery, or the situation... ^^;

I write whatever that appeals to me, to be honest. I write all kinds of genre - from humour to fantasy to slice-of-life, to thriller and the occasional horror. I only delve into whatever genre I need for the plot.

Applegate put it best:
Applegate wrote:My best genre is "nothing happens: the story".
To your question of humour, write what makes you laugh. What is your writing style then? I tend to write in a more light-hearted, (slightly) exaggerated style like this:

Dear God, he was beyond godly sexy.

Miyuki mused to herself as she watched him from the corner of her eye. She disliked him, that was for certain - but only because he was just so annoying. Stupid, egoistical...

"YUKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!"

A string of intelligible curses escaped her as she was suddenly glomped by her best friend.

Her hyperactive best friend.

"Reina."

Miyuki managed to speak, finding her voice. "What're you -"

"I can't believe you're here!" Reina exclaimed enthusiastically, interrupting her. "In the mall! God knows you hate this place, it's like a plague or something to you," She continued, "But since you're here, which is a miracle, I think, you and I'll go shopping and - "

Reina suddenly paused and Miyuki had a foreboding feeling.

"Oh, Yuki," Reina said in a sing-song voice.

She was doomed. Dead. Kaput.

"Is there something you didn't tell me?" Reina sounded utterly amused. Someone, kill her now. "You know, seeing as you're coincidentally in the same place as your 'hated' enemy and - "

"It's just a coincidence!" Miyuki protested vehemently. "My mom kicked me out of the house for the day and - "

"You were watching him," The brown-haired girl pointed out with sadistic glee, a smirk on her face. "Don't think I didn't notice!" Reina's smirk widened. "You were, and - well, well, look who's coming." Reina's eyes glinted with pure amusement.

Miyuki slowly turned.

For the love of ice-cream and all that was good, she ducked behind the menu as Tristan approached them, a thoroughly amused expression on his face.

Which meant he had heard everything.

"So what's this about watching me, Angel?"

Oh f***.

Technical writing. Fiction writing has never been my primary trade. However, if I had to pick a genre in there, I'd say I'm a good old sitcom writer (sci-fi, fantasy, modern, and any combination). Nothing beats those zany slice of life stories. Of course, I don't have any friends, so I have to draw a lot of inspiration from solely imagination, so it is also a weakness for me depending on how my brain is working for the day. My biggest weakness is writing porn. I just cannot do it for the life of me. I'll get into the descriptions and break down laughing.

I 'spose I specialize in fantasy and sci-fi. Slice of life just doesn't do it for me, there's always a sense of "been there, done that". But slice of life... in space? Now we're talkin'.

Fantasy.
every single story idea i have or have had usually involves magic and fantasy
im serious i can't remember any other genre i've written besides fantasy.

I aways had interest in mythology and mythical creatures and plus It gives a lot of room to work with, You can make up your own creatures and rules and stuff in fantasy and magical worlds :D

genre that im worst with....Probably horror, or modern slice of life. I just don't know how to write horror, just...nOPE.
and slice of life just bores me, Maybe slice of life mixed with fantasy or scifi or history, that sounds cool, but modern day slice of life, I can't get into it, I get bored trying to write it.

I want to say comedy too, im 99% sure im dreadfully unfunny, but i think my own jokes are hilarious okay. :Y

Drama, mystery, angst, fluffy romance (I once wrote smut but it never happened again) and fantasy. As my title says, I like dystopian settings, so yeah I usually stick with those (or at least where the protag is stuck somewhere bad at the very-ery beginning). At least, I'm comfortable with writing those. My humor's a bit bland so I don't even try.

I like supernatural, but I make ghosts sound more like killers and less than what they're supposed to be. I'm better off writing a murder story or better yet, a zombie apocalypse story (hey that's murder XD).

I'm a bit biased towards the elven race in fantasy though, so if I write in that genre, their involvement there won't be gone. I really love writing fantasy settings but I felt like a better story can be made with the realistic setting anyone can relate to, so I decided to practice on different genres.

If you ever encounter the need to write something you don't specialize into, one thing you should do is read things from the same genre and analyze how they work. Just saying. Believe it or not I got of all I know from romance with books and not real life. XDD

This, pretty much. Most of the books I read as a kid were of that type, and I was a fan of it before I started playing games. I have always been a firm supporter of science and its dire importance to the human race. And fantasy, well, it's just fun.

Let's see ... So far, I have ideas which range from horror, sci-fi, comedy, military, slice of life, psychological, all of the above, and so on. I think the one unifying theme of all my stories would have to be romance, though. I personally think I can write relationships and love scenes quite well. Of course, no one but myself has read them, so who knows! I need to hurry up with my VN.

For me, it would probably have to be school life, comedy, and romance. The reason behind this is because I'm still a school student (almost free, though!), I have (or I think I do) a sense of humor which mostly consists of sarcasm, and I'm a sucker for romance movies, novels, anime, manga, and VN's.
