I never had issues about writing akward or offensive stuff, my first story (which I wrote while having like... 11, 12 years old?) was actually filled with gore, sex and some of the darkest humour I've ever written...
Obviously that fanfic was a piece of s**t with no sense and untasteful, but duh.
Now I have no issues with most of the themes mentioned here. Specially gore and violence, which I am used to (fiction-wise, of course, but I admit I've seen some... hard stuff on the Internet and IRL) and are easy to represent for me. And there are a lot of ways to describe such violence (I personally get pretty graphic most of the times, since such kind of violence is brutal and supposed to be disgusting).
Same with cannibalism, incest and such. But I'll admit I'm not comfortable writing sex scenes, not for morale or akwardness, the reason is I have issues to write it without the act sounding... ridiculous, almost a parody. I blame Kinoko Nasu on that.
Awkward themes are awkward.

Nasu is a premier example of a great writer that can't quite handle sex scenes.... if only he'd avoid the seafood references in them....truefaiterman wrote: Same with cannibalism, incest and such. Sadly I haven't developed that poise. It's not especially awkward to write... just hard to write something that I could call satisfactory.
What -is- awkward for me is... -excessive- gore. I'm not one to shy away from having an arm chopped off during a sword-fight... but some authors really like to go overboard... I, sometimes, can't even read it... much less write it.

Re: Awkward themes are awkward.
I like writing murder scenes because, well, they leave so much up to the imagination. I have no problems writing about gore or cannibalism. In fact, most of my scenario practices involve either gore, murder, or cannibalism. On the other hand, I'm completely horrible at fight scenes. I hate how I can handle it being a one-sided conflict, but can't really write conflicts in which both characters have a fighting chance. I have no problems reading sex scenes, but I find them extremely awkward to write about.
