Need advice on Chinese names

#1 Post by Katta » Tue Sep 10, 2013 7:55 pm

One of my characters is of Chinese origin, so I wanted her to have a Chinese name, but with not so feminine meaning.
On some site I found Feng - phoenix listed as a Chinese girls name, is that true? If yes, what surname will it sound good with? If there's no such name, could you suggest something similar?
Thank you.

I would advise looking up Chinese naming conventions before searching around for names so that you have a better idea of the culture you're working with. There are probably many other sources on the web you could look up, but here's one example I found:

This link wasn't really helpful, as I knew it already, 3rd item about meaning was exactly why I made this thread, because I don't want the name to sound strange and I don't quite trust the names sites.
Also the character was born in America and doesn't have contact with any relatives in China, so I guess she would act more according to Western traditions at least around other Americans, which is the case in my story. If I'm wrong here, then I'd gladly hear any advice.

Hello! I just searched Google and found a name that you can use:
XIFENG (熙鳳): Chinese name meaning "glorious/flourishing phoenix."
As for the surname, how about Huang (黄 - Yellow)? The full name sounds all right to me (being a Chinese myself) and a phoenix is yellow-orange so I suppose it will better emphasize that.

Well, being Chinese, I can tell you that Feng (鳳) (Phoenix) is generally accepted as feminine and could very well fit with your character. Surnames are completely unrelated to names, being more dependent on family. Usually the surname has nothing to do with the name that is given. Also a name could just consist of one letter. In order to help you find a better name, would it be possible for you to describe your character further?

Great, because I really liked Feng and it also suits perfectly for my idea. As for her personality she is a closed type, her father was a famous scientist, who together with some other people invented the technology for Virtual Reality, so when he died she continued his work.

Well a popular name for female characters is RuFeng/RuFong (如鳳) (Like Phoenix, Phoenix-like). This gives the female character a slight "independent woman" feel. You could also use MeiFeng/MeiFong (美鳳) (Beautiful Phoenix). Since one character names are quite common, you could also just use Feng (鳳)by itself. You do not really need to worry about surnames because surnames are rarely, if ever, used when addressing someone. If these all do not suit you, tell me and I'll see what I can do. Or, use FongLee (鳳梨) (Pineapple).

I used this website when searching for a name to create a character Ming means Bright in chinese.
Sometimes i forget that chinese names actually have some beautiful meanings to them.

Thank you, I've found the name Feng on such site, I just wanted to check if that was a real name, because I know that some information may be incorrect.
