Writing dialog for characters of different genders

#1 Post by Kuiper »

On several occasions, I've seen the topic come up of writing characters of different genders (e.g. female writers trying to write male characters, or male writers trying to write female characters), so I thought I'd share several resources that I've found helpful. Roughly in (ascending) order of how much attention they require:

Writing Excuses podcast - Gendered Dialect, with J.R. Johansson (19-minute listen)

The Ezra Klein Show - Deborah Tannen on gendered speech (90-minute listen) (this contains some discussion of politics, which mostly occurs toward the end of the episode if you'd prefer to skip it, though the political discussion does pertain to the topic of how men and women speak and are perceived differently based on their speech)

Deborah Tannen's book, You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation (342 page book)
Necrobarista - serve coffee to the living and the dead
Idol Manager - experience the glamour and dangers of the pop idol industry
Cursed Lands - a mix of high fantasy and gothic horror
