Writing Experience

#1 Post by Equil »

Wanting to get some experience in writing and looking to either co-write with someone on a small project or write a story for an artist if they have a small project they want to work on. Since Its more of a writing experience for me I am looking to work on a project with someone for free and I would prefer it being a small project, wasn't sure which section of the forum to post on though so hopefully this is right place

A better section to post in would be "Recruitment & Services Offered > I am a Writer, Editor, Proofreader or Translator". You might also have more luck searching for projects you might like to work on in the "We are a Free Project looking for Partners" section, and contacting the people who are looking for writers there.

I hope I don't sound too mean, but if you want to write, be *very* careful about your spelling. Titling a post with "Writing Expierence" (it should be "writing experience" looks sloppy. (I'd be hesitant to bring someone onto a project as a writer who missed a fairly obvious spelling error.)

Nah I suppose it nots really mean solid advice for I writer, also not really relevant though besides the term Experience used I think I mentioned wanting to begin writing so theres a chance of little things like that also it was just a quick post that I wasn't sure what thread to put it under, I did spell it correctly in the post part I just missed it in the title is all, personally I wouldn't go by the titles or spelling for writers by their writing in threads like these myself as I find that there will always be spelling and grammartical mistakes in quick reply posts, that doesn't necasarilly mean that when writing stories they will be there since stories would go through multiple iterations with lots of editing making sure that there are not, thats why I think its best to ask for a short story from writers or something to see their writing style and how it pans out grammatically and such but that is just my opion

There aren't always any spelling/grammatical mistakes, even in quick reply posts. (While I hesitate to say that none of my posts have spelling or grammatical errors, I'd estimate my error rate at <1% of words typed.)

Stories do go through a number of rounds of editing, but most of these need to be provided by the writer himself/herself. (I personally refuse to proof-read pieces that have a large number of errors as constantly making corrections is exhausting.) Error-prone posts would also make me (as a game designer) concerned that the writer doesn't have the knowledge/experience to do most of their editing on their own, and so I'd either have to find an editor to help them or would have to copy edit on my own. (For what it's worth, it's easier to find writers than copy editors, so I'd be hesitant to do that!)

This is, of course, just an opinion. However, I do edit stories for an online magazine and can 100% say that substantial errors in the cover letter, early on in the story, etc. will cause me to send out a rejection even if the overall writing is good. (We do have a proof reader but 1) I don't want to make her hate me by giving her a story that's going to be a TON of work, 2) even trivial mistakes get in the way of my enjoyment of a piece and 3) when spelling or grammatical errors are severe, it can be difficult to even know what the writer is trying to convey. This doesn't mean that a post/story can't have any errors, but it does mean that I won't accept one that has a number of spelling and grammatical mistakes.)
