Music Resource~ Feedback

#1 Post by Kindred87 » Sun Jan 22, 2012 1:38 am

This thread is for completed works only. If you really want a WIP thread, then just ask. :)

Learning is an integral part of an art. It's what allows us to get into the field, and it's what we use to develop our skills and improve our future creations. That last part is the focus of this thread; a place where composers share their works, and others provide their wisdom in the form of feedback. Anyone is welcome to provide sensible feedback, and discussion of whatever techniques or methodologies are shared are highly encouraged.

But before you go off and make a mess of my thread :P, I'd like you to read through the sections that apply to you.

Creations~
For those who wish to share their works.

It's advised that you only include one to three songs per post, but if you really insist, you can post as much music as you want. (Just don't expect good feedback if you go this route) When you post however, please follow the below guideline.

Track Title :
Description :
Usage :
Tools used : (Optional)

Example post~

<Link to YouTube video>

Track Title : Rise and Fall
Description : This song is supposed to represent the passing of time. Though I wanted it to express a feeling of sadness as well.
Usage : Rise and Fall is going to be used in Tales of Friends <Link here> ('cause I'm cool :P), in a scene where one of the characters talks to the MC about life, and how things come to pass.
Tools used : Cubase 6, Symphobia 2, True Strike 2, & Alicia's Keys.

Feedback~
For those who wish to share their thoughts and wisdom on posted creations.

Remember, anyone can post feedback. (Just make sure it's sensible!) When posting, you can provide feedback to as many songs as you want, though it makes things less chaotic if you keep it down to one or three songs. Whatever you do, please follow the below guideline.

<Poster's Name Followed By Song Name> (Or something similar)

<Feedback below>

Example Feedback Post~

MrDudeBro39's Rise and Fall

I thought the usage of the Uillean Pipes (Bagpipes) put a nice, natural quality into the song. However the melody played by the piano is somewhat boring, since there's so little variation. I believe that you should work on varying up your melodies. You can improve your melodic lines by using different note lengths, or with different amounts of notes per phrase. (E.g. 3 notes - pause - 2 notes - pause - etc.)

Another thing. Given the scene in the game, I think the drums you used makes the song feel way more epic than it should be. Unless there's some sort of battle involved, you should really tone down those big drums!

Counter-Example Feedback Post~

Whatever his name is.

It sucked eggs bro.

Feedback Discussion~
For those who wish to post about feedback.

Anyone is welcome to discuss the feedback that's given here. (There's not much else to say besides that!)

Example Feedback Discussion Post~

@MsGalSista93

Oh...my gosh! I compose a little myself, and I always wondered why my melodies seemed to be lacking. I mean...I can establish the mood pretty well and all, but my songs just aren't interesting enough. (They don't have that extra hook!) After reading your post, I realize that my melodies need more variation in them. I should be able to make my songs more exciting and interesting now, so thanks alot! Oh, and while I'm at it, do you think that the same principles apply to chords? Is it better if they differ a bit? Or should they be pretty uniform?

Resource Feedback and Suggestions~
For those with anything to say about the resource itself.

Post feedback or suggestions here if you wish, or PM me. Whichever you prefer.

Example Resource Feedback and Suggestion Post~

Yeah, the red text at the top of the OP looks pretttttty evil, you should totally change it. Oh, and you should add a section for people like me...well, okay, not "people". See, I'm an alien :)

Assuming you've read what you needed to, go crazy.

I'm posting this song I made a while ago (last year I think).

http://soundcloud.com/nebomushi/ripples-1

Track title: Ripples
Desc: I imagined a scene where the heroine, from a game that samu-kun made, would be crying, near a fountain.
Usage: I first intended to make it for fun, then planned to use this for my game as an ending song.
Tools used: Reason 4, mouse, 32 boxes of Bahlsen's "Croissant de Lune"

For now the theme sounds quite amateur, and I really would like to know how to make it sound better.

I'd start of with a different rythm of the hat in the beginning. It's at the exact same moment when the piano plays these few notes, making it sound a little static. With some variation it's going to be better allready, just like you used the fills when the actual drums come in, that's good.
Maybe add some more instruments to give the piece a more complete (Strange, to hear that from me) sound. Personally I find this the hardest part but when I listen to music in a similar style, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfZ1IgjW ... re=related for example, at around 1:44 you'll hear a lot of different layers of sounds, for example the high notes played by a bell and later a higher piano comes in as well, these are the things that make it sound complete, and it definitely helps in getting a more professional sound. And with a good foundation like you've allready got, it should be within reach.

You used some really good tools :D

I'd say to try to let the the hat fade in, and maybe (Emphasis on maybe) have a part where the music drops off and the melody plays on its own, before returning to the full mix.

I have a question however: The song doesn't give off a definite feeling of sadness/sorrow, was that intended?

Thanks for the comments.
I'll try to do what both of you are telling me. I'm thinking about another set of pad to fill in the most important part.
It's a little difficult, considering the amount of notes intertwining together at some point.

I intended to make this theme to be somewhat nostalgic, reminiscent of the past of a character (so it fits to a character remembering his/her past I think). It's not all black, so there is a little hope at the end of the "trip". But still it is made to be somehow sad, like something you aren't able to regain once again. So in a way this song might mean "a page has been turned".

I have to say that this version is better, unfortunately, I don't know why >_>

Track Title: Asa -Morning-
Description: Just as the title says~.
Usage: Made it for fun. May use it for a game.
Tools used: An iPod Microphone and a iffy upright piano.

I had this reviewed by a few people, but the most interesting one I heard was this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-F8P0_A9y8

The resemblances end at the beginning phrase, and the songs go their separate ways. Also, I've never listened to Natsuzora when I first composed it. Only after.

I can't hear a resemblance between the two songs Image

The quality's quite good for an iPod, and the song has an excellent sense of emotion. (I'm not even going to comment on how Eastern it sounds xD) However, that sudden transition (it first occurs at about 0:03) is a bit jarring. I understand that surprise is good in a song, but for that transition in particular, I believe you should smooth it out.

I may be the only one who thinks this >_>, so you'd be wise to await more feedback.

It's a piano thing~. (^_^) And I just really liked playing that.

If I arranged it for a different instrument, I'd have focused more on the melody instead and/or maybe added another note to help in the transition, but I think I worried more about the second phrase when I was composing it, so it dropped out of the radar.

There really wasn't much of a resemblance to Natsuzora, right? It still sort of bothered me for a bit though.

Also, I blame the stack of JVN/Anime OST's and certain composers for the Eastern influence. xD

Honestly, I didn't hear anything that sounded similar...besides the usage of a keyed instrument o.o

Is this song fully-custom, or does the site kind of automate stuff for you?

Woah, you really are full of motivation when it comes to music Kindred, all this organisation and rigor, hmm.

Anyway I'll give it a try (and will give feedback after, of course~) :

Partially atomated. It works the same as Sony's ACID Xpress, except with more options.

Hi. I'm new here.
I've listened to your track. It's a simple melody. I like it. The main theme could definitely be developed, using different scale or something. Overall it's good.
