Music Software and Tutorial help

#1 Post by redeyesblackpanda » Thu Feb 23, 2012 10:25 pm

I've composed music using Sibelius before, and it's good for printing sheet music, but I don't have a personal orchestra.
The instruments on Sibelius work for giving an idea of how the music sounds, but are entirely unsuitable for creating digital music.

That said, I'm looking for both software, and a helpful tutorial (especially the last part, because I've downloaded a bunch, but have no idea how to input notes and use voices).

My assets:
Musical knowledge (as a violinist)
Laptop

What I do not have:
a MIDI keyboard
piano playing ability

What I'm looking to do is write digital music, and I'm interested in finding something that can use a wide range of quality digital instruments (from brass, to woodwind, to strings, to percussion, to electric guitar) and can allow me to manipulate dynamics and tempo fairly well. It'd have to be something that I'd be able to do with just a laptop, because I don't have a MIDI keyboard or any ability to play the piano. I may very well have downloaded something like this, but I can't figure out these other programs, so I wouldn't know... (For reference, Sibelius has you input notes onto sheet music, so that's what I'm familiar with. Everything else, I'm probably ignorant of.)

I think I've repeated myself a couple times in this post, so I apologize for that, and I thank you all in advance for your help (and tolerance of this relatively long post  ).

Not really checking the forums any more due to time constraints, so if you want to contact me, PM. I'll get a notification and log in.
Also, I've been hit and run posting, which means I don't see many replies. If you want to respond to something I've said, also feel free to PM me.

NOTE: if you've got questions about vnovel or things like that, it's Leon that you should be contacting. Leon's been pretty much handling everything, but due to various reasons, I've had to withdraw entirely.

As I said on Skype, you have the great and free Macaw. But you have a "piano roll" to put the notes, so it could be not what you're familiar with. On the other side, things like Anvil Studio have a sheet music style but give you midi tracks.
Hmm you could make your midi tracks on a sheet music style software and then import theme with a real composing software / VST & likes host (like Macaw, FL Studio, Ableton, etc..).
Feel free to ask questions about Macaw if you're thinking of work with .

Wathever, I will think about it.

Hm... do you think it'd be possible to use Sibelius and Macaw together? Sibelius can export midi files...

Well, every 'host' program can import midi, notes will just put themself on the pianoroll.
So as long as you can export midi, it works !
