BGM and Sound effect help

#1 Post by uselessp » Fri Jun 29, 2012 12:36 am

Well, I'm quite troubled since I'm not experienced in finding any difference.

it's about the music type. Should I use the .ogg formatted type, or the .mp3 formatted type in music and sounds?
I can't find any difference, except how big and the quality of the sounds are.

If I uses Ren'Py, which one is better? Please tell me your opinions and your usual choices.

I haven't noticed a distinct difference between the formats myself. I would use whatever is easier for you.

MP3 is a commercially licensed format (Fraunhofer institute) whereas OGG is an open source format. Theoretically, if you make money with a game containing MP3 coded music, Fraunhofer can sue you for licensing fees. Therefore, use OGG.

Moved this into asset creation, because turning music into digital form is also some sort of "creation".

Didn't know that about mp3s. Thanks for the tip, Taleweaver.

I prefer to use .ogg files for size reasons. I cut off at least 20MB from my latest visual novel by converting all of the .mp3 files to .ogg ones. I used Audacity to do that.
