Copyrighted Music...?

#1 Post by Pecora Z » Fri Aug 03, 2012 4:01 pm

I know I'm going to sound like a complete n00b over this question, but for one of my VN's I'm hoping to have characters with different video game motifs- and like for the one who loves Pokemon, I was hoping to either use remixes of Pokemon music with permission from the person who remixed them, the official Pokemon songs themselves from the games, etc. Would it be against copyright if I were to use Pokemon sounds, music, and images or would it be alright because I'm not making a profit?

Thank you!

Short answer: yes but, long answer: no if

Yes, it's against the copyright, but in most cases, you're unlikely to get sued over it if it's a non-commercial purpose.

No, it's not strictly against copyright laws because there's something called "fair use", and if your intentions fall within that definition of "fair use", you're allowed to use copyrighted material. Check out Fair Use laws and then decide whether you want to go for it.

I usually recommend against using copyrighted materials. Lawyers can be evil people.
