I personally like it if VNs have music AND they're right for the theme of the game. If it's too much though, I tend to just mute it.

I usually play VN with music on it since it gets exciting and make me go with the mood in the story. So in another word "YES". Music can quickly establish the mood of a scene even before the audience starts reading.

For example, removing Umineko's BGM would be an heresy, Ya shall never do that.
