Do I have to make my own music?

#1 Post by Cakey »

I want to make a VN all by myself. It would be noncommercial project. Do I have to make my own music? Can it be cover of music from movie or anime? Are there some free, good and pretty melodies that I can use not worrying about copyright?

There's quite a lot of music out there that you can use for free in non-commercial projects. One place to start looking would be the Creative Commons section of this forum;

I would not advise using covers of a song you don't have the rights to. You likely won't get caught by the people who actually own the songs, but it is pretty poor taste and also players who realize it's not your music might give you a hard time over it. If you're making a personal project for you and maybe some friends I guess that's not a big deal, but if plan to release your VN to the public it's not a great idea.

Released:
A Foretold Affair, My Magical Divorce Bureau, XOXO Droplets, Lake of Voices

Lots of free-to-use music here. As long as your project is free all you have to do is credit him.

This is where I've been grabbing stuff for my soundtrack. It's all Creative Commons; you have to check individual licenses on tracks, but most of them are free to use for noncommercial works, as long as you credit the artist.

It's got a range of different styles and genres (although you have to sort through them one by one, the search function is the WORST), including a lot of instrumental, so it works pretty well.

I'll tell you what I know about music copyright, but I'm no attorney.

First, you should generally stay away from cover songs. Even if it is noncommercial, as far as I know you still need to get the music licensed, and we all know music licensing is a huge pain. If you're dead set, these links may help you a bit. http://www.easysonglicensing.com/ https://loudr.fm/licensing
Be aware that some of these might just license the song for you to record and sell, so make sure to contact the team beforehand.

Check music under a creative commons license. https://creativecommons.org/choose/
This website highlights all the different creative commons licenses, so you can even find music that you can use commercially.

You can try to find musicians here. Lemmasoft is a fairly friendly community, and some people are willing to help you for free. If your set on working alone, try making your own music! It's not as hard as it sounds, and even the most popular visual novels just have guitar or piano music.

Hope I helped!
I'm Kei! Because I like Key but Key was taken XD

Music from commercial movies and anime will have copyrights. Especially famous music. I don't suggest slapping a John William movie score into your game. There are different creative commons licenses, music licensing websites that vary in price, and composers that also vary in rates. Good luck!

Try royalty-free stuff. You can always try to hire a composer from this forum that will agree to do the work for free. Other than that, there are websites for making your own tune from tiny bits and samples (usually the amount of them is horribly limiting though).
