Hi, everyone!

I've been trying to get some attention for my free royalty-free music tracks that I've been creating with some support from my patrons on Patreon
(https://www.patreon.com/ExPsyle). I figured this is a great place to start because my first, full-featured OST was done for a visual novel (Unbroken Hours's "Princess of Ruin", http://unbrokenhours.com/ruin/). That was pretty much the project that made me realize I can be a music composer.

Please take a look at my Bandcamp store: https://expsyle.bandcamp.com/

Essentially, all albums except the game-specific OST's are royalty free with attribution (i.e. mention me in the credits of your projects) and all albums with the Patreon logo is 100% free with attribution. So feel free to take and use what suits your needs.

Wishing the best for all your projects! <3

Not everything needs to sound realistic. Midi-ish sounds can be really cool in pop and electronic music, and of course certain kinds of game music. We know it's not real but it's fun.

This, but with that said, if one is to use synthetic sounds, it pays to put in some work into humanization and polish the sound design because very often it's less an issue of things being unrealistic and more of them being sterile or awkward.

Hello, I have a Soundcloud page here with some of my instrumental demos. I don't know if any of it would work as "gaming music".
Anyway, there's some electronica, some old school Hammond organ, one church hymn, one 1950s "slow dance" with twangy guitars, one spoof Strauss polka and one bossa nova...

Can make/upload more if anyone's interested.

I really dig a lot of this stuff. Some of the midi stuff does some a bit nakedly artificial, which I personally like.

Here's my https://soundcloud.com/hemspekilegur/. Most of it is just me messing around tbh. I apologize for the recording quality of any non-midi instruments :D .

Here's a few alright ones:
https://soundcloud.com/hemspekilegur/cu ... he-strings
https://soundcloud.com/hemspekilegur/drone_test
https://soundcloud.com/hemspekilegur/ki ... toneputiti

I could definitely use some tips and constructive criticism, so if anyone wants to... def don't hesitate.

I quite like the sound of Cutting All The Strings, that would work really well in a mystery or horror VN with a sci-fi element to it. c:

If you want your music to be used in a game, it's probably going to be looped (as opposed to if it was in a film, for example). Music samples that are too short get too repetitive if they're looped, and people start to notice that. The actual sound that you've got is really nice, though, good work!

Thanks! Is there a rule of thumb for a good looping time length, where you can be sure it's non-repetitive?

+1 for Cutting All The Strings, great little piece for mystery/horror.
Works well, very illustrative, especially for games that have a bit of suspense, where you don't quite know what's around the next corner. 8)
Keep doing what you're doing.

----------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure if there's a rule of thumb for looping length.
One of my all time favourite classic games is Heroes of Might and Magic III which has a great orchestral soundtrack.
It's on Youtube, here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q43G9FTaomg

----------------------------------------------------

The soundtrack for Heroes III contains these MP3 clips:
9 short Victory/Defeat/Battle clips - from 0:04 to 0:22 (4 to 22 seconds)

25 Main/Campaign themes - from 0:42 to 1:41
Here you have for example "Main Theme", "Good Theme", "Neutral Theme", "Evil Theme", "Secret Theme" etc.
The music becomes "happier" when the gamer is winning against (for example) the Dragons.
It switches to a darker theme when you're in trouble and about to get eaten by the Behemoths.

23 Terrain/Town themes - from 1:52 to 3:46
These clips are longer - they are played when you move across the map or when you're in one of the towns.

----------------------------------------------------

I'm no expert on loop lengths so I'm just guessing.
But based on the classic Heroes III, I'm guessing that a "main theme" could be about 45 seconds to 1 minute in length.
Might use 3-4 different "main loops" that are similar in style and sound.

Then play them in the order of "clip1-clip2-clip3-clip4-clip1-clip2..." etc. until the gamer presses the "Next" button.

A Soap Opera Intro Theme + a spooky tune + a love song

Here are a couple of clips I just posted on Soundcloud.

1) An intro for a (fictitious) 1980's soap opera: :)

The picture is a "virtual soap actress" created in Poser (Victoria4 from Daz + a few character add-ons).
Might work as an intro for a game too. Maybe.

2) A "suspense" theme. I was thinking about ghosts during composing:

3) A love theme that I hope could suit a romantic visual novel:

Thanks for checking it out, glad you enjoyed the riffs. I like some tech death like Decapitated & Demilich.

Boy, I know that feeling. I went through it myself, but I like what you have so far. It sounds solid.

I did this track for this year's NanoReno, which in my case happened to be a horror one. It's not perfect, and it could use some tweaks, but considering it was done in a span of 3 days and for fun, I'm ok with it. Plus you don't often hear metal tinged drums, or enough rock bass or guitars in VN music so this was a good opportunity to implement those. 8)

Nghe bài hát này rất phiêu, tôi đã có những phút giây thật lạ khi nghe những dòng nhạc này. cảm ơn nhé!
