A different style of music

#1 Post by Mariaachi »

A relative of mine is a music producer based in the Caribbean - link to his youtube here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI-Cbe ... Q/featured

He does Caribbean-inspired beats like Soca, Reggae and things of the sort alongside Pop, World and Fusion among others. If you're interested you can check him out and see if you want to purchase or hire him to make a couple songs for your VNs. Critique is useful and a wonderful thing.

So I have a handful of questions but first examples! :D
Soca can be very party-centric like

Machel Montano's Lip Service https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dV806x1hbk or Pternsky's Enjoy Yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN14v_P-61g

Others like Voice have another approach in 2018's Year for Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9NJGwNxcmI or even Kes' Hello https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9NJGwNxcmI

Some of us are familiar with Vybz Cartel and some of his songs like Electric https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcDVCpHjHew

Reggae beats like Protege feat. Chronix Who Knows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzqFmXZ8tOE

Dancehall artiste like Popcaan and Sean Paul too.

Of course, our music can become explicit like Freezy Split in D Middle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrSM5WiBH_A
Or others like 'Inches' which is a popular one (not linking that one, it's incredibly explicit in its content - I'm sure you can figure out what inches are referring to)

Then again, not all of it has to have lyrics - the steel pan (National Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago) plays some cool stuff.

Here is another version of Kes Hello https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJNjlQEy_CA or even a steel orchestra! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtCwA9Mg9vw

As an alien (or newborn if you choose to delve further into this) what is your opinion on this style of music?
Would you listen to it regularly? If so, why?
Would this style of music (perhaps without vocals) appeal for VNs? Under what circumstances?
What did you like or dislike about the music?
If you create music (or are in the music industry in some way, shape or form) is this something you would attempt creating?

And finally - are there any types of music (or genres) you feel more inclined to making/listening to? Would you say this was influenced by your upbringing and your family's musical choices?

Thanks for answering and happy VN-ing! :)

ooh I love these!! Honestly I've only listened to pop-influenced reggae/etc, but in general they always feel uber groovy and put me in a good mood. I've always been partial to jazz, just because I like listening to music that makes me feel "comfortable"(?) but I can definitely see myself delving more into soca/reggae!

I can definitely see non-vocal versions being incorporated into a VN- it may be tricky to incorporate it into, say, a mystery VN set in 1800's England, but other than those kind of situations, I don't see why it wouldn't work in other VN's!

Uh, now I really want to draw something tropical. Reggae always puts me into automatic vacation mode... I think my mind has just tied reggae beats to islands, etc... oof.

Thank you for all those links! I will definitely be listening to them more \o/
