Newbie when it comes to sounds, have some questions regarding FreeSound.org

#1 Post by GammaBreak »

So way back I was tentatively starting a project with someone, and they told me that we didn't have to worry about investing any money towards sound effects and could just grab what we needed off of freesound.org. I'm working on a different project now (my first) and I had been in the mindset that sounds on freesound were simply there to use, but I've just now noticed that there are some licensing things.

Some sounds are marked with the Creative Commons 0 License (https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/) which seems pretty straightforward in saying "just use it for whatever".

However, some sounds I've been using (placeholders for now, but wanting to use final versions of them) have the Attribution Licenses (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/). Furthermore, there is also an Attribution Noncommercial License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/) that says you can't use a particular sound for commercial use (unfortunate, because I found one sound I really like and use heavily that has this).

So can anyone help me understand the Attribution License? I don't fully get everything the link explicitly says is required when crediting the use, like the Copyright and License notices. What would I need to put into my credits if I wanted to use this sound in my game?

I am not a lawyer. Use my advice at your own risk.
I recommend stating what cc license (3.0) you are using and the url for the site where you found the sound (https://freesound.org)
You must give credit to the creator of the sound (in this case Gate_Open_00.wav created by LittleRobotSoundFactory).
You must provide a link to the license (in this case https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode)

Some of my visual novels are at http://www.the-new-lagoon.com. They are NSFW
Poorly done hand-drawn art is still poorly done art. Be a Poser (or better yet, use DAZ Studio 3D) - dare to be different.

I've managed to find more audio with the Creative Commons 0 license, so I don't think I'll have to use anything with an Attribution license. But that's good to know, going forward, if I find a particularly good audio sample I like.
