Free and Open Source Software for assets

#1 Post by lsf22 »

If you like me have a budget then you should definitely take a look at Free and Open Source Software to get the job done. You can see it referred to as FOSS, which is mostly used by the Linux community. As for someone who's daily driver is a Linux Operating System, I am creating my own VN from Linux with FOSS software. Yes it can be done, I will list a few to get you started.

For Drawings and Images:
Gimp
Krita
Inkscape (Really good for logos and vector images once you get the hang of it)
Pinta

Music:
LMMS (DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)) I use this one mostly, it's available on other platforms as well, I think even on arm64 Linux distros as well
Audacity - Audio Editor

Photos - If by chance you use real photo assets in your game
Darktable

Misc: Some other software I use with Linux to aid me as well
LibreOffice - Like Microsoft Office but a free and open source version - I can make guides and lists for my game
Artha - A thesaurus app (Sometimes you need vocabulary to expand upon for writing)
GoldenDict - A dictionary app (Same as thesaurus, for spelling and proper usage of words for the writing process)
Atom - a text editor
MediaInfo - utility for reading information from audio and video files
WinFF - A graphical User interface for FFmpeg, I tend to convert file formats when needed for projects

Recording:
OBS Studio - For video capture, recording and live streaming (In case you need to record footage of your game for promotional use etc.)

Don't forget
Blender: easy 3d modelling
Lunacy: which I use to design user interfaces
Dragon Bones: 2d skeleton animation
Standard Notes: which I use to sync notes about my game across my devices
visual studio code: my preferred text editor (esp. when working with Ren'py)

For free art software but not open source, you can also use:
- Medibang Paint : free on windows, Android and iOS but might have some ads on mobile
-Fire Aplaca: free on windows, art file compatible with Medibang ( Medibang was created from Fire Aplaca) but seem to perform better than Medibang on Windows.

They perform better than Krita on old, weak PC ( but ofc with less feature than Krita)

For animation there's Opentoonz and Synfig Studio.
