ToL 1 - No go on starting?

This is where all the old Lemma Soft-specific posts are (i.e. Tales of Lemma 1, Shoujo Attack!, and some Hanafuda Club). They are here for old times sake ^^

ToL 1 - No go on starting?

#1 Post by Guest » Sun Dec 28, 2003 2:14 am

For some reason, whenever I start Tales of Lemma, the screen goes black suddenly, like it's about to enter a game, and then it reverts back to the desktop. I have Windows XP, and unzipped everything to a single folder (ToL 1, it's on my desktop, maybe it should be somewhere else)

I think the most frequent cause of this problem is your desktop color depth being set to a mode that is not supported by DirectX in 640x480. Try changing the color depth to 16-bit, 24-bit, or 32-bit and see if that helps. (Don't try 256 color mode.) One of those three color depths should work with the game. To change depths, right-click on the desktop, select "Properties", and then go to the Settings tab.

That should do it :)

Well, uh, I run normally in 1024xWhatever resolution (I just memorize the first set of numbers for each resolution, I usually get it right) with 32 bit color mode...all the time, and I tried switching it to 16 bit. Nothing.

The other explanation would be that you need this file in the same directory as the game:

alleg40.dll (version 4.0.3)

I accidentally included version 4.0.2. It usually works the same, but some people had the problem you have with it. Try the new one.

Gah, still nothing, if it helps, that optional Allegro setup thing isn't working much for either, like it isn't detecting my MIDI or something (I know what MIDIs are, those digitalized music peices, no words)

The problem is most likely that the screen can't change to a 640x480 DirectX supported mode. You need to find out what color depths are supported in 640x480 resolution and change to one of them. If none are, you're kind of out of luck :? Maybe releasing a version 1.1 with an option for playing inside a window is in order. ^_^;

You could also try putting all the ToL 1 files into a different folder than your desktop (it couldn't hurt :?) and trying different compatibility modes to run the game.

Hi, another guest here :D. I also have the same problems as the person above, ie. the screen turns blank then reverts to the desktop, and the Allegro setup doesn't work. I have tried combinations of 640x480 (16 bit), 640x480 (32bit), and my normal resolution (800x600) at 16 and 32 bit...

Seems that none of them work, with the 32 bit combinations, the screen just goes black and reverts back, but with the 16 bit combinations the screen goes black, reverts to desktop and then the message "Can not set video mode" pops up, then the program just has a 'fatal error' or something.

The following is from the debug, but I have no idea whether this is helpful or not :? :

I have the alleg40.dll (version 4.0.3) file in the same folder, and have also tried moving the folder to a directory other than from desktop...I can safely say that it still didn't help

Here's my system specs:

Windows 98
ATI XPert 98D AGP 2X Graphics Card
DirectX 8.1

>.< Any way of figuring out my problem? Or am I eternally doomed to live in damnation with this neolithic piece of junk of a computer

Thanks,

Uggh....It's me again...um the above Guest...

Turns out that Shoujo Attack! has the exact same problem cept this time if I use 16 bit it doesn't have a "Can not set video mode", just goes straight into the 'the program has performed a fatal error' or something.. woop-dee-doo for me.

Help?
