Shoujo Attack: Another weird bug: minimizing hangs

This is where all the old Lemma Soft-specific posts are (i.e. Tales of Lemma 1, Shoujo Attack!, and some Hanafuda Club). They are here for old times sake ^^

Shoujo Attack: Another weird bug: minimizing hangs

#1 Post by Erik » Sat Jan 17, 2004 7:27 am

If I minimize the game while pausing it (or just in the main screens), by pressing ALT-TAB, the computer hangs for about a minute. If you maximize it again and then minimize it it works well most of the time but sometimes the screen turns black and a few things (like the smileys in the new-post screen here) do appear.

Any idea what the problem is? :|

I don't understand what you mean by that part. :? Please explain! :)

Ok. I'm now typing in the post-reply screen. There are smileys next to the typing box you can use in your post by clicking on them, right? Ok. Now, I start Shoujo attack, to find a level name for example. I found it, want to continue later so ALT-TAB out of SA. I see my browser window as a black box, but the smileys I can click on in the screen where I type my reply are visible. The rest is black.

I think that sort of things just a windows problem...I get it with some other games if I've understand what you've read right.

I would explain the described behaviour as follows.

Your browser window is a part of your screen in control of your browser application. The application makes things visible by painting them on this window. However, to save time most applications do not continuously keep painting, but in stead they only paint changing things, since the rest was already painted anyway. In the case of a browser most of the things are stationary, but the smileys are animated and clearly the text you type is also changing, and therefore the portion of the window containing them has to be repainted.

Normally this works just fine, but in your case the screen was erased because you was playing a game in fullscreen mode. When you return to windows using ALT-TAB, the entire screen should be repainted, but this obviously did not happen. I do not know who is to blame for this, probably windows or perhaps your browser application. I don't think it is Blue Lemma's fault though.

To solve your problem you need to somehow tell your browser that it has to repaint itself. Usually resizing or minimizing/maximizing the window does the trick.

f <- frame [on resize := repaint]

Thanks, that explains part of the problem. The other part is - I can't resize anything because the computer doesn't react at all anymore for a minute :P
Anyway - it must indeed be a Windoze bug, they occur quite often anyway :D

Well, the fact that your comp hangs whenever you switch out is another symptom of the problem that caused the window to black out. Happened to me all the time on my old 98 machine, usually after it had been running for a few days. There's really not much you can do to fix it, other than upgrading. :D
Kyra: "You can kiss my acetabulum!"
Lord Pathos: "Hmm, tempting offer, coming from a cute girl like you."
Kyra: "Ug, I think I'm gonna be sick. Tom, let's get this quy, quick!"

I got the latest upgrade for XP 3 days ago :|
And, it still doesn't work properly. But - I expect it's just a Windows problem, don't fret about it too much :D
