And here's a track from the game! One of a handful that I've finished so far.

I'm awestruck. The work put into to this game already is so amazing and inspiring! I really love this! Not to mention the historical theme is the coolest! My mom is a historian so I grew up watching documentaries and getting lectures on all kinds of things so this really peaks my interest and is in general really cool.
Gosh if you guys could see how giddy I am. XD

Thank you so much awesomepigman!
I finished another background! Though... I spent waaaaaay too long on it and now it doesn't match the other one...
Also a mock-up of the GUI with sprite and background. Rins did an excellent job colouring Gio!

Well, I'm painting them, which is faster for me and it helps that none of the perspective is super complicated. Rins did lineart for me that I used as a base for the structure. Apart from that the techniques used are pretty similar to any other type of painting. You have a rough base and you work in details over the top. I am using some photo textures to bypass some of the detailing such as bricks and whatnot, though other details like the candy jars are hand painted. One of the big things I found with painting backgrounds is you have to be patient because it's going to look like crap for about 90% of the time you work on it and only really pulls together near the end. That's obviously hard since you kind of have to trust that it is going to work out XD Other than that, I guess it's practice? I've been painting backgrounds since 2013 Nanoreno when I did Witch/Knight.
Oh and do lots of research. When I didn't know what to put on the counters for instance I looked at photos of old candy stores for ideas!

This is my first time following NaNoRenO WIP but geez, you guys are doing so great! The background, the sprites; you even make the music! Not to mention such an interesting story! This is simply awesome for a one-month work. I hope everything will go well for you! Really can't wait for the finished game! Good luck!!

I LOVE all the backgrounds for this! I can tell that an immense amount of thought and work went into them. The art is one of the reasons why I'm so excited to play this once it's ready.
