Colours;Said[NaNoRenO 16]

Hi everyone,

this is my second time doing NaNoRenO. I learned a lot from last year and will approach this from completely another angle. I'm also working solo this year so the scope is as small as I can get it.

I will try to focus on the atmosphere to create a mysterious confusing tiny probably kinetic slightly branching visual novel. I have a crude initial plot outline but it's more a feeling than a story in any case, well see how this goes..

Update 1: I'm worse at writing than I remembered.. I have cut the writing scope...

Update 2: I have had barely any time to work on this but I'm still about on schedule! aww yes

Update 3: I think I'm pretty much finished, I'm really proud of these animations and stuff! Completed thread here!

day 1: Main BG
days 2-14: writing, ~5k ~2k words
days 15-20: GUI, main menu bg, additional art
days 21-27: Programming, finding needed sounds from freesound
days 28-30: Making sure everything works and so on

Keeping it at a reasonable size is a pretty good way of approaching a game jam. Good luck with your VN :)

Thanks for the encouragement!

Been pretty busy but I managed to about reach the lowered goal for text a bit earlier than I planned even if the text is really bad and confusing, so I started working on the GUI now. Not really anything amazing but good enough, I say. (Moving the buttons pixel at a time sure is fun..)

Everything it's always harder than we remember, hahaha. I thought I was going to have it super easy because I design and write a lot in my native language but now that I'm trying to write the script in english.... -cries-

Anyway, you can do it! It will be hard but it's okay!

Finished a bit early this time.. Maybe I cut too much of the writing scope and even the little I managed is pretty confusing.

What I learned:
  • I should find a writer instead of trying to write by myself
  • You can give parameters to transforms, a life saver really
  • Ren'py GUI programming
  • This art style is pretty fun and easy to keep consistent
  • sprites would probably need more detail in the art style
  • You can make a 360 degree background
  • Using a 360 degree background is hard and pretty useless
  • 360 background needs to be longer in x axis than 4 times screen width to look proper
  • Drawing 360 background that looks okay when rotated is hard
  • Directing the sprites/sounds is more boring than I remembered
  • syncing sounds with looping animation needs sounds with corresponding lengths
  • writing on forums is still scary

Fun art style. It looks very good. I'll give this one a whirl (haha spinning joke...).
