Open-License Games

#1 Post by PyTom » Fri Jun 01, 2012 7:44 pm

This thread is for linking to games that are licensed under open licenses. The games should have their own websites or threads.

Ren'Py
http://www.renpy.org/

The Ren'Py Visual Novel engine is licensed under the MIT license. The character and background art for the Ren'Py Tutorial Game and The Question are available under that license.

Moonlight Walks
http://www.bishoujo.us/moonlight/

Moonlight Walks is available under a modified MIT license. You can't use the assets to make a game called "Moonlight Walks", but they are available for games of any other name.

I have two open-license Ren'Py works:

Our Personal Space
http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... 11&t=30470
The code, writing, and sprites of this sci-fi relationship sim, are licensed under the GPLv3. Its other resources are licensed under other open licenses.

The Prisoner
http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... 11&t=29905
The Prisoner is a short horror VN dual-licensed under the GNU GPLv3 and CC-BY-SA-4.0, which means you can use either license. Its code is public domain.

Ummm.... What are "Open Licensed" games? (I know the question sounds dumb, but I really don't know what It means.)

An open license is one that allows users to see, modify, change, and redistribute code and/or other assets. For example, with a Ren'Py game that is open license, you can look at the source code to see how the author did something, and (depending on the exact license), you may also be able to copy parts of it for your own use, send it to whoever you want, or make a different game using some of the same content.

Open licensed games are especially useful to new creators because you can see how other games work.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone is allowed to do anything with my game Pervert&Yandere. You're going to have to claim it as your own work and distribute it for money before I'll speak up. Anything less than that, and you're in the clear.
