Nothing like a great time hanging out on a nearly isolated beach.
No need to give credit, feel free to use them however you like.

Yet another note: The last two photos on the bottom right are taken a year ago. I plan to revisit the bikeway again during the autumnal change.

A necessary early trip for experimentation, making this an exception. The autumn leaves are not fully developed yet.

OMGG have I ever told you that you're easily my favourite person!

These are such awesome photos! I couldn't resist playing with a few of them ^^";; I onlt had to apply filters and do very little repainting to get the following:
001.jpg
002.jpg
(In case anyone's interested, the filtered images are free for grabs. No need to credit or anything like that.)

Thanks for sharing these. :D

You're welcome. :)

The filtered images looks delightful!

Tomorrow I intend to take pictures of the bikeway. Rarely have I heard such setting used in stories.

I added several photos of the Bikeway although it was a partly cloudy day, I couldn't get much of a good lighting. I'll try again during the autumnal change to capture the tree's vibrant colors.

It's simply amazing how much you've contributed to this forum so far, Alte. I hope that my meager offerings take a bit of the pressure of finding goodies off of your back.

These photos are absolutely lovely, Alte! Thanks so much for sharing. :D I don't suppose you have them in slightly larger resolution? (I'm looking for 1280x720 or 1280x960 specifically)

@ fioricca
Wah, what magic is this?? The colors on the water are so pretty. <3 Do you mind if I ask what your filtering technique is? I'd really like to make a set of beach/ocean photos like that for my game. :)

No higher resolution, I'm reconsidering of getting a better camera. I'll try to recapture them with the specified size next time.

My next trip to the beach is about seven weeks, I'll even include photos of the boardwalk for differentiation.

OH HEY I got your PM, but I'll post my reply here for everyone's sake. It's really not complex at all. First I 'recolour' the photos using Colour Dodge fill layers (I used soft light previously, but find that Colour Dodge work much better for photos), and adjust contrast with brightness/contrast and hue/sat. My goal here is to get colours that are as anime-like as possible, so I tend to kill it with the saturation. Once I get the colours which I think are nice, I merge all the layers together and apply the Oil Paint filter, tweaking with adjustments. The point is to get something that's not too crisp (it'll look photo-like) but not too stylised either, so my settings are always on the lower end. I use zero shine too. Of course, you end up with something that's got a lot of gaussian blur, which generally does not match the sharpness of hand-drawn sprites; so I duplicate said oil paint layer and do a smart sharpen on it. My settings are pretty extreme, but it's so I can fiddle with the opacity afterwards. It's easier for me to control the sharpness values that way. (I actually stole this trick from OokamiKasumi.) After that is manual repainting like enhancing the colours of the sky, adding clouds, softening shades... and doing whatever's left to do. It's actually surprisingly fun and addictive so I understand if you later share that you ended up filtering hundreds of photos at a time... OTL

Some tips for the recolour process:
--- I typically use four fill layers for colour dodge, red, yellow, green and blue. This is because they're primarily the values that I'm interested in tweaking. You can choose any shade of light red/light yellow/light blue that you like as long as they fall in those categories. Sometimes, when I'm interested in a magenta value instead of red, I change the light red to magenta. It depends on what you need.
--- Alte's photos are really good because the sky is captured well. You'd only need to airbrush it with deep blue on overlay (best done on a new layer) to enhance the colours. I used this a lot for the water too; dark/deep colours set on overlay makes a certain colour richer.
--- Conversely, dark/deep colours set on screen is what I like to use to soften dark shadows and give it more colour than the standard grey.
--- for repainting (anything that uses the Brush tool), any set of painting-based brushes like these ones will do.

The bulk of a photo is really in the recolouring. Colour it well and the rest is easy. I'm afraid I don't have any tips for different times of the day though, I'm still experimenting with that -- taking daytime photos and making evening/night variants of them. But I'll be sure to share when I've gotten somewhere ^_^

Hope that helps?

Also AWESOME PHOTOS I'm really going to have to play with them one of these days *o* Thanks so much for taking these Alte!

Oh, another photo collection! Thanks a lot for sharing, Alte! I really dig the extra moss-covered rocks, very interesting shapes and textures.

And thanks for sharing your technique fioricca! The filtered images look nice. I'll definitely try it out : )

Ooh you're awesome - thanks for going into so much detail! I've played around a bit trying to mimic the images you made, but I still have a ways to go before I reach your level. I'll keep experimenting to find what colors/blending options look best together!

@Arowana:
Actually, have a .psd file. There's no one set method to do it because every photo is different; some would need more recolouring than others. For this one, I recoloured, filtered, painted, found it a bit too blue so adjusted the colours some more, and then checked it against some character sprites.

Nothing can beat hand-drawn BGs in terms of polish quality, but for quick placeholders/freeware, I think this looks okay. That only took me about 15 - 20 minutes to do, and was really fun to make too haha. For greater coordination, you could prepare the BGs first and then colour the sprites against the background; I've yet to try that since I'm too lazy to draw a finished sprite for testing purposes, but I THINK it should look better and make the photograph less out of place. :p
