HigurashiKira: As well she should. :D Her spiked armlet might give her some small protection against her blade-wielding delinquent compatriots.

I don't know why, but seeing this guy's expression made me think of him as the kind of man who would challenge a god.

!!!! Oh my friend you so rock! That picture is awesome! I really can see him having that kind of attitude. Now I'm going to have to find a way to use that in the game! Thanks. Oh and loving the shirt design.

Awesome. :D The shirt was kind of an afterthought of "lightning = Zeus", but it grew on me.

Style screwage. I get the feeling that this is a rhetorical question, given the makeup of these forums, but which head do you find most appealing and why?

Huh, that's a different response than what I expected. XD Encouraging though.

So I was thinking about doing a female-character version of this tonight, when one of my friends decided to instruct me on how to draw TEH MOE. Here is what happened.

1. (10:53:35 PM): (Vel) Draw a blank face with shoulder blade length hair
(10:53:43 PM): (Vel) DO NOT FINISH THE CHIN EITHER
(10:53:49 PM): (Me [referred to by other screenname]) Wait, what
(10:53:51 PM): (Vel) Draw the cheekbone lines, but that is it
(10:53:53 PM): (Vel) Trust me

Image

2. (11:00:26 PM): (Vel) ALRIGHT
(11:00:27 PM): (Vel) Now, Musket
(11:00:37 PM): (Vel) Draw the -outline- only for the left eye.
(11:00:44 PM): (Vel) Don't fill in the iris or anything
(11:00:54 PM): (Vel) Just the general shape you'd associate with eyes normally/your style

Image

3. (11:04:31 PM): (Vel) Now for the fun part, Musket
(11:05:10 PM): (Vel) Roughly speaking, the more oblong you make the eyes themselves, the more moe it is.
(11:05:40 PM): (Vel) That is to say, in that eye outline, draw an oval that consumes most of the 'white space' you've included within the eye area
(11:05:50 PM): (Me) Ahhhhhhh, I see.

(11:10:33 PM): (Vel) We move onto facial structure.
(11:10:51 PM): (Vel) The rough idea has always been "Boys = sharper, girls = rounder", but that's not helpful when your art style is predominantly sharp.
(11:11:14 PM): (Vel) The real note for making masculine and feminine faces is where and at what angle the chin begins to slope.

(11:14:19 PM): (Vel) For the drawing, try drawing a moe chin
(11:14:27 PM): (Me) Ok.
(11:14:31 PM): (Vel) Which has a very small 'chin point', but a wider jawline

Image

4. (11:35:11 PM): (Vel) What you have right now is the Aoyama Motoko look
(11:35:27 PM): (Vel) *using Love Hina terms due to the very specific character shifts and representations*
(11:35:36 PM): (Vel) Rather than being moe, you've drawn a strong woman.
(11:35:55 PM): (Vel) That isn't to say you've drawn an emotionally stern or other personality type
(11:35:55 PM): (Me) lol
(11:36:12 PM): (Vel) But rather, you've drawn a face that has regal stature or noble presence to it
(11:36:30 PM): (Vel) Note that the chin itself is not a point, but rather a very well-rounded end.
(11:36:45 PM): (Vel) This marks her as being older, and having a more defined bone structuer
(11:36:48 PM): (Me) Needs moar pointy?
(11:36:55 PM): (Vel) If you were to make it more pointy, however(!)
(11:37:07 PM): (Vel) It would greatly depend on how you altered the -jaw points- as well
(11:37:17 PM): (Vel) By leaving them where they are, but changing the jaw lines to meet at a point.
(11:37:47 PM): (Vel) You would make a more youthful face that can have an indeterminate age range.
(11:37:55 PM): (Vel) It would turn the face itself into a "moe" face
(11:38:06 PM): (Vel) Which can express 8 - 18
(11:38:43 PM): (Vel) However, if you were to raise the jaw points to create a point chin, you'd create a longer, sharper face that would lend to the older 30'something office lady
(11:38:56 PM): (Vel) And if you were to lower the jaw points, you'd create the more child-like innocent face.
(11:39:48 PM): (Vel) For this exercise, (unless you've already started something), I'd like you to try lowering the jaw points and making a sharp-er-, but not pointy, chin.
(11:40:10 PM): (Vel) It should end up looking similar to the bottom of a heart.

Image

5. (11:40:56 PM): (Vel) Yep!
(11:41:04 PM): (Vel) You've now made the rounded heart-faec
(11:41:20 PM): (Vel) Freaky how such little changes do so much
(11:41:53 PM): (Me) Soon we will be on our way to moemoekyunville.
(11:41:59 PM): (Vel) Kek
(11:42:10 PM): (Vel) Now it's time to do an eye comparison.
(11:42:29 PM): (Vel) By which I mean, you're going to draw an entirely new eye that does -not- match the one you've already drawn
(11:42:39 PM): (Vel) I shall mark the top and bottom points.
(11:42:43 PM): (Me) Ok.
(11:43:17 PM): (Vel) Or I'll punch the shit out of this computer's internet
(11:43:49 PM): (Me) lol
(11:47:56 PM): (Vel) [link]
(11:48:09 PM): (Vel) That's roughly your area now
(11:48:16 PM): (Me) womgg
(11:48:18 PM): (Vel) Feel free to draw the inner eye as well
(11:48:27 PM): (Me) Same-ish shape?
(11:48:28 PM): (Vel) No animu details yet, though
(11:48:43 PM): (Vel) As the last one, as -similar- as you can
(11:48:48 PM): (Vel) While still making it look like an eye at that size
(11:48:58 PM): (Vel) You'll find it interesting to try and retain the shape
(11:49:15 PM): (Vel) Because it can't be too far left-right wise
(11:54:04 PM): (Vel) [link]
(11:54:08 PM): (Vel) Visual example for you

Image

6. (11:54:11 PM): (Vel) See those eyes?
(11:54:16 PM): (Vel) -Fucking 1/3 of entire head-
(11:54:25 PM): (Me) haha
(11:54:47 PM): (Vel) A lot of times
(11:54:57 PM): (Vel) Moe art will actually keep eyes fairly animu
(11:55:02 PM): (Vel) and just -shorten the heads-
(11:55:36 PM): (Vel) Congratulations, Musket
(11:55:42 PM): (Vel) That is a fairly successful moe eye outline
(11:55:57 PM): (Me) Eyes so hueg

(11:56:49 PM): (Vel) What's next is to draw the neck.
(11:57:03 PM): (Vel) Which, as you may have guessed, is tiny, yet longish
(11:57:48 PM): (Me) *nod*

(11:58:11 PM): (Vel) After that, because there's no point in just uploading a neck
(11:58:25 PM): (Vel) You want to draw the shoulders and whatever body will fit on the page
(11:58:31 PM): (Vel) The -major- point of moe bodies, however
(11:58:37 PM): (Vel) Is to make them frail and "Ohgod I want to hug it"
(11:58:48 PM): (Vel) Which means shoulders lean downwards as you go further out
(11:58:55 PM): (Vel) And the body itself is...
(11:59:08 PM): (Vel) Oofh
(11:59:19 PM): (Vel) The shoulders themselves shouldn't be further out than the edge of her hair
(11:59:23 PM): (Vel) At farthest
(11:59:32 PM): (Vel) Ok.
(11:59:56 PM): (Vel) *After that one, we get to do fun minor details that turn her into a desu*

Image

7. (12:12:25 AM): (Vel) Okay!
(12:12:58 AM): (Vel) Now that we have the basic moeshape down, it is time to begin adding specifics and making edits
(12:13:11 AM): (Vel) In particular, we go to her face.
(12:13:35 AM): (Vel) Musket, how do you think we would draw her empty eye (th eonly one that matters) as being all concerned and inoffensive?
(12:14:01 AM): (Me) ??
(12:14:44 AM): (Vel) If all we can work with is the area around the right (the moe) eye.
(12:14:54 AM): (Vel) What do we have available to give her personality
(12:15:01 AM): (Vel) Hint: bodypart
(12:16:03 AM): (Me) Eyebroooooow?
(12:16:11 AM): (Vel) Correct!
(12:16:28 AM): (Vel) The typical moebrow is honestly pretty simple
(12:17:16 AM): (Vel) and by simple
(12:17:20 AM): (Vel) I mean "it's a line"
(12:17:29 AM): (Vel) No real dimensions to it
(12:17:36 AM): (Vel) It's just an angled line to denote emotion
(12:17:45 AM): (Me) Flat, up-angled line?
(12:17:56 AM): (Vel) -Curved-
(12:18:15 AM): (Vel) The trick with moedom is everything is bent.
(12:18:18 AM): (Vel) In the worst of ways
(12:18:25 AM): (Vel) Example:
(12:18:34 AM): (Vel) [link]
(12:18:52 AM): (Me) fuckin' kanon
(12:18:58 AM): (Vel) *pat*
(12:19:38 AM): (Vel) Speaking of which, after the eyebrow, we have the mouth and nose to add.
(12:23:55 AM): (Vel) Pretty much as simple as the eyebrow, sadly
(12:24:01 AM): (Vel) the mouth is a little flat heart.
(12:24:13 AM): (Vel) it's there to show she -has- a mouth
(12:24:22 AM): (Vel) Which can do mouth tthings, but doesn't talk much, if you get the point
(12:24:27 AM): (Me) Flat heart?
(12:24:41 AM): (Vel) The top of the mouth doesn't have the two bumps in a normal heart
(12:24:51 AM): (Vel) But is rather flattened to make a slightly rounded top
(12:24:51 AM): (Me) Ah.
(12:24:56 AM): (Me) Noooooose?
(12:25:33 AM): (Vel) Only half necessary
(12:25:46 AM): (Vel) You could literally ignore the nose
(12:25:48 AM): (Vel) Or
(12:26:03 AM): (Me) *if nothing else, nose gives better sense of where to place mouth*
(12:26:16 AM): (Vel) You can a -goddamn dot- in the center of her face
(12:26:21 AM): (Vel) I am not kididng
(12:26:26 AM): (Vel) With moe, the focus is on the -eyes-
(12:26:26 AM): (Me) lolol
(12:26:34 AM): (Vel) The nose and mouth are there to confirm humanity
(12:26:43 AM): (Vel) And to hold glasses
(12:26:46 AM): (Vel) or to be laughing
(12:26:53 AM): (Vel) They're more tools in this style

Image

8. (12:30:16 AM): (Me) I think I accidentally the facial proportions
(12:31:49 AM): (Vel) TOUGH SHIT, MUSKET
(12:31:53 AM): (Vel) -because that's moe-
(12:31:56 AM): (Vel) Right there
(12:32:03 AM): (Vel) You just drew 'quiet library girl moe'
(12:32:13 AM): (Vel) Now, Musket
(12:32:16 AM): (Vel) We -hide the other eye
(12:32:30 AM): (Vel) By extending her hair to cover the left half of her face
(12:32:31 AM): (Me) WITH A FRILLY EYEPATCH?!!
(12:32:34 AM): (Me) Oh okay.
(12:32:44 AM): (Vel) Moe doesn't get avant garde, Musket!
(12:32:55 AM): (Vel) It just gets "Please hug and protect me:"
(12:33:07 AM): (Me) I guess her hair should end up being black to cover all this up.
(12:33:15 AM): (Vel) Nah
(12:33:21 AM): (Vel) See, I like what you did on the right
(12:33:26 AM): (Vel) Where there's a black line
(12:33:35 AM): (Vel) That's going to either be a ribbon or a hat

(12:41:57 AM): (Me) *may just go with a ribbon, out of laziness*
(12:43:08 AM): (Me) Or perhaps even... TWO
(12:45:03 AM): (Vel) With -flowers- on them
Image
(12:45:18 AM): (Me) *will add the flowers*
(12:45:37 AM): (Me) Her appeal is taking on less of a librarian edge now.
(12:45:51 AM): (Vel) Soon, th emoe will entrap you
(12:46:26 AM): (Me) Never!

(12:50:00 AM): (Me) Also, what manner of outfit should I give moemoe here
(12:50:18 AM): (Vel) Victorian era dress
(12:50:21 AM): (Vel) Or a nightrobe
(12:50:37 AM): (Vel) -Alternatively-
(12:50:42 AM): (Vel) If you make her hair light coloured
(12:50:46 AM): (Vel) You could pull off a sundress
(12:50:54 AM): (Me) Hmmm.

(1:00:04 AM): (Me) Almost done.
(1:00:17 AM): (Me) SO PROUD OF YOU MUSKET
(1:00:22 AM): (Vel) In a single night, you have learned to moe
Image

9. (1:04:17 AM): (Vel) Look at that, Musket
(1:04:21 AM): (Vel) Just look at that.
(1:04:33 AM): (Vel) You have learned to craft the adorable
(1:04:46 AM): (Vel) None of the Renji can stand against you now

(1:05:22 AM): (Vel) For drawing this, you have -mastered- it
(1:05:29 AM): (Vel) Thus, it is one of your many tools now
(1:05:34 AM): (Vel) Rather than something that consumes you
(1:05:35 AM): (Me) *proceeds to color it*

Impressive transition there. It's actually quite pretty, even if likely to cause cavities. :D And, alas, the dot-nose; I confess to being entirely too fond of it.

I like 2 the best. Mostly because I'm all about androgyny, and have a secret vendetta against jawbones. There's something to be said, though, for styles that can be described as smooth. I like the more well-defined nose and the hair in 1, though.

Also, you might be surprised about what people want to see--I think that although a lot of folks draw in a more stylized way, and often a more "anime" sort of stylized, there's a lot more people who get excited about art that doesn't fit that norm than there are people who just want to see the same old thing.

I confess that I like androgyny in characters as well, but generally female characters. :P I clearly remember the days when I used the same head and body for every character, male and female, with only eyelashes to distinguish the latter from the former, so I've been trying to distance myself from that ever since. XD

Oh yeah, in addition to delinquentization, I will also offer medievalization and cyborgification (preferably not all three in one request). If I'm ever feeling particularly crazy I may also take requests for two-character scenes, as I need to practice for CGing.

If I don't get any new requests by tomorrow I'll start work on Death_Hug's second delinquent. Until then:

*pokes head into topic cautiously* I shall admit to looking through this thread once before, and I really hope that my artist doesn't beat the crap out of me for ruining her bishies boys. If you do happen to feel "particularly crazy," can you draw Elise and Joshua from my game? Their designs are on the 9th post of this page. I'd like to have a picture of Josh hitting on Elise, because that'd be awesome in your art style <3

If that's too demanding of a request, you can just delinquentize Joshua. Oh god, Ryurieri, don't shoot me for ruining your designs D:

P.S. I'm totes going to play your brotome game once I have time. It's much too amazing to ignore >:3

Ruining? You Lemmasoft ladies sure have an interesting way of insulting/requesting my art. Is that how you normally make requests?

But you get a pass because you want to play my game. :P

Oh yeah, so I had no idea what color anything was so I just made them up

OMG, I can't breathe D: It's. Too. HHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG!!!
I should have mentioned that the guy is part Vietnamese, Chinese, and Russian though. Ah well :/ Also, usage of the word "babe" is reserved for the hipster Xavier.
I don't even know what to say other than a)you work fast, b)it looks awesome, c)I must copperplate that line in the game, and d)you even colored it! THANK YOU >:3 Also, I wasn't sure if Ryurieri would let me ask other artists to draw her precious bishies, but I'm sure she'll love this. I didn't mean to offend you ;-; YOUR STYLE IS TOO INTENSE.

I'll force ask some other people to check out your game too  You must finish it for great justice!

I really like how you draw that cyborg up there on your previous post. I'm not sure if I'm right, but it seems to resembles of, um, an animal/insect I think? With that tail, and I'm pretty sure it has that eye and the seem-likely face. But I feel like its arms are longer than the legs, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I like samurai girl as well, and since your friend doesn't like your present, I'll take him home~

You know, from what I see, your skills are details, your details are so neat.
