I don't know who told you your art is bad. If that's all they told you, without giving you any suggestions for improvements, ignore them.
I am not an artist, but I've seen artwork that is LOTS worse than yours (in other words I like your art).
My opinion and $3.50 will get you a cup of coffee at Dunkin' Donuts.

I really love your art! It's fantastic. Don't call it bad!

I like the shading and the style. It's sort of my favorite - not anime but that animated style of some sort of kid's cartoon. But more mature. Kind of a perfect balance between realistic and cartoony (:
SO DON'T CALL IT BAD.

I'm the one calling it bad, because it is actually kind of bad.

Well then it is bad!
Look at how awful...!
Um... The Anatomy is just a...!
Uh... They lines are totally...!
Coloring... could be... Uhhh...
Yeah, I got nothing.
I think you might put yourself down a little to much about some of these pieces. Some of these are pretty professional looking.
There you go! Your love towards your works needs to be better, they're like your babies!
You can't hate your own babies now can you?

You're talking to the guy who doesn't understand why the hell people get sad over puppies dying. (I mean that literally, I just cannot see what the big deal is about it.) So, yes, I'm capable of hating my own work. Because I recognize that it's nowhere near professional, the coloring is typically terrible, the anatomy is actually off in a lot of places, and on top of that, I actually don't do enough of it.
You know how artists are supposed to be drawing every day? I've gone whole months without so much as a doodle in recent times.
Why the hell do you guys even see in this stuff?

Sniff.... *hang head in shame*
I think the line art is really good, better then what I can do. (i'm so messy). But seriously, your definition of bad...I think bad as in not recognizable if I cannot tell it's a cat/dog/person then to me it's bad. But what's your saying is if not professional then it's bad? What is your definition of average then?
I think it's great that you recognized that you need more work.
I don't, maybe cause I'm terrible?. But you know your work has value and you might want to see it if you want to do something with your work.
Because if you're serious about your work (if you're not then this don't apply) then you need to see your work as what it is, it's not bad. I really really like your art style.
But what do you want us to say exactly? Do you want us to prove you wrong? Or confirm what you know?

My definition of "Average" I guess, would be something like this:
http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/ ... 4w17n0.jpg
I would only consider my artwork professional if it looked more like this:
http://th02.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/f/2 ... 5pnp8d.jpg
http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/ ... 5fxhb3.jpg
-And I don't want to hear that "Don't compare yourself to others" bullshit. I'm trying to be a professional artist, these guys are my competition, how do you think that makes me feel?

This a Good sign really. Try not to attack yourself too hard but keep that feeling. It will keep you from becoming stuck on your own fumes.
NOW your art is actually better then average so keep practicing. I can see your heads need work and you need to work on line weights and thickness. Keep at it!

If you haven't drawn in months and you want to be a professional artist then pick up that tablet pen/traditional medium of your choice and start drawing. Pessimism doesn't make you a professional, it's practice.

You art isn't bad at all, it's not perfect, but it's not bad either. You might need some work on the lines and shading before you can reach commission level, but it's still above average.
I wouldn't consider other artists my "competition" since there will always be someone better than you. What makes any artist special is how they use their knowledge, draw what they enjoy and have a unique style. I would think of them more as a "goal" that I want to reach rather than trying to beat them somehow.

I want to mention this that I've brought my art to people whose opinions I hold in high regard. They've only confirmed that my art is still nowhere near as professional as I need it to be.
EDIT: I think this was a mistake. I'm doing the same thing that I did to the last community I tried to join. I think I'm done.

That has not stopped a LOT of commissioners. Your what I like to call alternative content. If I'm trying to design a character I'll post it up usually in the "free art" commissioners to see my character through their eyes and get an Alternative perspective. If I find something I like I'll incorporate it into my design, wash, rinse repeat.
Your lot are more willing to try something new and experiment and in doing so get better at your skill.

If you want some suggestions on how to get better, here's what I saw:
-work on color theory. A lot of your painterly style seems to have too much contrast between highlights and shadows, or too little.
-Look into different brushes and programs. Right now your brush strokes are making themselves way too obvious.
-Honestly, a lot of what you showed just lacked polish. Make sure that you're working in as high of resolution as you can, and zoom in when you need to.
Ultimately, like the others have said, it just comes down to practice. One thing you might want to do is work on a "showpiece", something to say "This is what I can do, and it is awesome!" Once you get it done, don't show anybody. Once every couple of months or so, come back and work on it some more. Try to make it as polished as humanly possible. Once it's become only an average example of what you can do instead of the best, then you can show people. Just remember to keep all the different steps (sketch, blocking in, shading, etc.) That way, if you want to work on an earlier step, you don't have to start from scratch.
Good luck!

Yes, it's
clearly not professional. Saying something is "bad" is different from saying it's "not professional." Most of us here are not professionals, and there is a wide continuum of skill and we're all trying to improve. For most of us, saying a piece of art is "bad" is not helpful -- it's better to find out specific things that are done well and specific things that are not done well.

I'm curious what that means. What mistake?
I think it would help us a lot if you told us what you want to get out of this community and this thread. It seems that your goal is to become professional, so it'll help us give you what you need if, instead of saying, "tell me what you think or whatever," say "Here is where I'm at, but I want to get to the professional level. What do I need to work on?" Tell us what you're looking for, and we'll try to help.
