Re: Sendo's Sketchbook
Ahhh I'm so in love with the angled brush! <3 I've been playing around it for about a week now and I'm really happy with my results with it. Unlike the hard round, it gives you angular strokes but isn't too blocky like the flat brush. Here's the BMP file for SAI users: https://www.dropbox.com/s/w4md5l1po02bebi/Angled.bmp try it!
The first two are my practice paintings using the angled brush. Please excuse the wonky anatomy of the girl D: I was mainly concerned with painting heh. The second is a thumbnail exercise focusing on hand-picking colors (no color picking from the picture). It's a challenge to correctly guesstimate the right color but it's pretty cool when you get it right (or pick something close enough =p). Fun exercise to improve understanding and confidence in choosing colors. The last one is a bunch of figure and people sketches for practice, practice, practice!

I really like the style of the girl (I like all your work, but more realistic style is my favourite at the moment). Do you plan by any chance to do commissions in this style (maybe a bit less sketchy hair)? Sorry if that's not a good place to ask.

Re: Sendo's Sketchbook
Hello! Thanks for the kind words and interest! Yes I will open up shop in the future once I solidify the style and settle some issues. Right now the style is in an experimental stage so the quality fluctuates a lot. I'll be sure to update this thread with progress. Again thanks for the interest and sorry for the very late reply, I'm dealing with a few IRL things right now. Cheers!Katta wrote:I really like the style of the girl (I like all your work, but more realistic style is my favourite at the moment). Thanks a lot chocojax! I really love exploring ways to understand colors and ways to use brushes so I'm glad you find it nice :3chocojax wrote:Daaaamn, just wanna say, your colors are really nice. I love 'em, as well as the way you use brushes!

Re: Sendo's Sketchbook
Another art dump, now with 3d! ahaha xD
Getting back to 3d and I thought I'd challenge myself to create an anime classroom. Modeling was done in Blender, rendered with Blender Internal and post-processed in SAI and Photoshop. Did quite a lot of experimentation and post-processing to get the lighting to look good. Here's the original (disgusting xP) Blender render for reference: http://sta.sh/0u7m9cmpyxu. There's quite a few tangents in the image but overall I'm pretty happy with it
I'm thinking of doing a 'process' shot and a bit of a tutorial for the next background I make because I discovered a somewhat reasonable workflow to work with backgrounds. Unfortunately, I only tested it on 3d backgrounds but I'll see if I can adopt the technique to 2d backgrounds as well.
The girl was an attempt to go back to soft-shading because I've been doing paintings for a while and I thought it was a good change of pace. The lineart is a mess because I'm spoiled with minimal lines/line-less paintings -.-. Also more studies of semi-realistic paintings, mostly using the hard and soft round brush this time because the angled brush is giving me headaches in some... angles >_>. I still love the angled brush, but alas not everything can be done using it aha Dx

Re: Sendo's Sketchbook
Thanks unknown5! Glad you liked the speedpaint. My drawing process nowadays is different from the one in the video. Maybe I could do another speedpaint to show that hmmm

Re: Sendo's Sketchbook
Man it's been a while since the last time I posted! Anyway, I wanted to do an environment that's all in 2D and while I was sifting through my reference folder to look for reference I stumbled upon this picture. It looks kinda neat. The colors are really dull though so I tried using saturated colors because I was going for an anime color palette (ya know bright, colorful, happy). I quite like it! But I think I should have spent more time detailing now that I look at it.
I've also been studying different character art styles and I think I finally found a style that I want to pursue (I hope so lol) I'll see how far I can go with it ^^ And here are a couple of sketches I've compiled, because this wouldn't be a sketchbook without sketches no? ; ) Loved how the old guy turned out so I painted him a bit

Re: Sendo's Sketchbook
I know I said this before, but man, those look awesome. The way you handle colors are definitely your strong point. :D
The colors on the old man also look super nice. Although, the bridge of his nose looks really flat (perhaps it would've been better to curve it out a bit more on the sides) and the part where the bridge delves in a bit between his eyes is also really flat, as if it's on the same surface as the rest of the bridge.
All in all, very nice and inspiring to look at!

Re: Sendo's Sketchbook
^///^ Thank you Choco! You're right about the old guy. I didn't have any references in hand when I painted him so I knew there's bound to be a lot of errors. Will definitely paint the nose better next time since it does stand out. Thanks for your feedback! ^___^

Re: Sendo's Sketchbook
Thank you! I started drawing seriously in June last year so I guess a year and a half?
I should add that by 'seriously' I mean that I don't just draw whatever. I draw a lot and I do all sorts of studies — anatomy, gesture, color, proportions, composition, perspective, studying other artists, watching tutorials, speedpaints, the list goes on and on. I just had a very loose roadmap in my head like 'when I get better with anatomy, I should do gestures' or 'when I get better with lines, I'll focus on colors'. And I thought of them as milestones and I searched for ways to achieve those.
Speaking of studies, here are a couple of studies I did the past weeks except for the first one! That one was something I did way back in June 2013, oh the horror >.< but yeah that was the level I started with.

Re: Sendo's Sketchbook
Man, your improvement is great and your dedication to backgrounds is amazing as well. Really love your colors.
Re: Sendo's Sketchbook
Well you're obviously a natural! I could only dream of doing art like this. >.<
But it probably was partly due to the dedication and focus - sometimes the hardest part is bothering to draw something every day!
Hey, have you done one of those "from then to now" meme things?
