Sprite Critique Please!
Sprite Critique Please!
Hey everybody. I've been writing and programming my project for months now, and I've finally started on the in-game art. The first talk sprite is done, expressions and all. Cadence here is the standard for important character sprites; two poses with about five basic expressions for each. Anybody care to take a look at her set and tell me some things I did wrong/right? Any advice would be appreciated!
Also, if you would like more information on Cadence or any one of my characters, please take a look here:

Wow! So many!
It's hard to tell the difference between a few of them, but that's likely because of the small size.^^

Re: Sprite Critique Please!
Your CGing and lineart is nice and neat, so keep that part up. I like the variety of expressions and the character design as well.
What I would like to critique is the anatomy of the skull and face. I wouldn't think it'd bother me if the body proportions weren't more polished in comparison to the head; it literally looks like a balloon while the eyes, nose, and mouth are miniscule in comparison. The eyes don't have to be huge, but the back of the skull should not take up 90% of the head. I'll make a quick outline soon to show you what I mean.

Yes, that is a huge problem of mine I tend to draw the hair way off the back of the head outline, making it look really bloated. I'll keep this in mind. Thank youMaiMai wrote:it literally looks like a balloon while the eyes, nose, and mouth are miniscule in comparison. Re: Sprite Critique Please!
Like with everything else you draw, you just need to learn how to make a good guideline for your heads so it's easier to make it proportionally correct. Here's my correction and here's a link to Viria's face tutorial. It's not so much a tutorial for hard and fast rules, but rather a way to approach drawing faces and heads that I think should help: http://viria13.deviantart.com/art/a-ver ... -348958712BlueB wrote: Yes, that is a huge problem of mine I tend to draw the hair way off the back of the head outline, making it look really bloated. Thanks a lot for the time you put into that When I have the time I'll make some corrections and will definitely improve!MaiMai wrote:BlueB wrote: Like with everything else you draw, you just need to learn how to make a good guideline for your heads so it's easier to make it proportionally correct.

So I tried it out and well... It looks weird. I actually prefer the older version. Her head just looks weird to me XP I know it's more anatomically correct, but it just doesn't look good.MaiMai wrote: Here's my correction

Re: Sprite Critique Please!
I think the new one looks good because there's a better focus on the face, but you can use the one you prefer. You may not like the smaller head because it doesn't translate her head tilt as much as the larger head or you're not used to it and it doesn't make the facial features look as good.
It really comes down to stylization preferences, so if you want the bigger head, stick with it and be consistent with other sprites you draw.

I ended up with a mixture of the two. Not as cartoonishly huge, but not perfect either. I really like this new set, actually, and I think I've improved because of it. Thanks a lot for all your help!
