It's confusing because I'm not starting from a newbies position, I know the basics but don't know what to do "next".
Anyway here are some drafty concepts I'd like feedback on so I can get an idea of why what I'm doing isn't working. (Sorry I don't know how to post them not in the stupid box - Please just open these in another tab so you can see them properly. )
Random sketches:
Dan kinda reminds me of an anime character but I'm not sure which one. He also doesn't look plain enough for his character
This small project I have:
Don't talk to me about sameface, they are literally the same person.
THE BIG PROJECT:
- Initial Art (In anime style, don't know why cause I suck at it):
- Next batch of art, when I realised the above sucked and was beyond salvation:
Mostly happy with these two but think Sarah's arm needs to be brought in more. Also wondering about making her face less wide but I kind of like it. Took a picture of some of her expressions which I thought were pretty good but can't find it...
I quite like this one.
I'm proud of this one because I have trouble drawing people from the right. And I like her hair.
I don't know what's wrong with his face but it freaking bothers me.
Mostly have to fix his hair - which I've done but didn't take a picture of! So dumb...
I can't work out where the fat should be deposited so we get chunky rectangle man
Shorten torso?
Side character concepts - I know they look shit, they're meant to. I didn't spend much time on them just wanted to nail down some visuals.
And that's all of them!
Remember they're my starting off point so I haven't integrated the racial features as well as I could have because I haven't done the research. My sister thought this guy who is meant to be the equivalent of South Asian in this world was white and I honestly didn't think he did look white! I guess even as a poc it's hard to break away from standard white people features because they're so culturally pervasive in mass media.
So yeah... I gotta work on that. Make the African look African, the Indonesian Indonesian, the Hispanic Hispanic etc etc. At least Sarah looks Anglo Saxon like she's meant to. Really it's the guys who need the most attention.
Also think the difference in body types isn't evident enough. There's a clear difference between Sarah and the other girl but the guys all kinda have the same figure and it's because I've forgotten how to draw guys anatomy! I used to be pretty good at it too
And the poses. On my next go I think I'll use photo references because I obviously can't think of or draw realistic poses. (I blame fashion school.)
But apart from all that I think I did a pretty alright job in general of hammering down the aesthetic (though it needs to be further refined) and designs of the characters. Hoping I can get some advice to take it to the next level. My preferred art style is cartoony-realistic but mines a little less cartoony if that helps. I'm sorry I'm bad at describing what I mean but I think you can kind of tell from the pictures.
Bonus redraw of a cat girl from an old concept:
Just wanted to make a less - I'm a generically cute girl with ears, whiskers and a tail! - and more I am part cat. Also gave her a pear body type instead of generic slim whatever. I was thinking it'd be nice to get back to this someday and I guess it would be popular considering everyone is half-animal. The funny thing is though the concept was groundhog-day-ish lol.
Well, that's it! I'd love any help, advice, redlines, links to tutorials, whatever.
