Minyan's art thread

#1 Post by minyan » Sun Feb 15, 2015 6:17 pm

Imageshack deleted all my images. -_- I'm gonna stick with deviantArt for all my art upload needs, now...
Attached a sketch to show the general process of how I work. Also posted in the show your base thread xD

Question! Do you prefer your sprites to have some sort of dynamic pose? Do you even really notice? Do you think sprites that are more stagnant (hands at sides, etc) are boring?

I tend to prefer sprites with some sort of movement going on (a hand behind the head, folded arms, etc), but at the same time it's a fine line between what looks visually interesting and what just looks like someone randomly posing in the middle of your screen, changing their expression every few seconds xD

But I like a little bit. Like the sprite in the sketch, for example. Thoughts?

I'm not sure if my critique really counts as critique because I have zero experience in designing logos aside from class assignments I take like 10 minutes to do on Inkscape.
But, the font for 'circus' makes it hard to read. I'm not sure if it's me, but it's hard to read. Maybe it's the clutter from the petals (?) in the background?
Anyway, hope that helps! (I'm not really a critic, I think... )

No, it's not just you, n0tgin. I found it hard to read, too. I read it as "Arcus", by the way. What I can compliment, though, is the color and illustration. I really like them.

Of course it counts xD and yea I was worried the 'petals' would make it hard to read. They're actually a form of currency used in the game to show rank, so I wanted to put them in there somehow, and I liked the starburst effect, but I think readability is more important. I think I'll move the ones behind circus so it doesn't overlap. Thanks!

Thank you! I think I'll try a different font, but I like the sort of spiky objects on the sides so I'm gonna try to keep those while making sure it's readable.

I liked the second one. But yeah, you can listen to the experts, not me. ;)

I like the second one! The font change makes it a lot more readable now!

Vote for the 2nd one, too. Both of them have definitely better font than the last one, and I like the illustration's position in the 2nd one better than the first one. :D

I think you can use better fonts and try to bring some harmony to the shapes and texts by using same font for all of texts, same color and match sizes of elements to each other.
and remember when you present a logo to the client you should be able to explain every line and curve to him and why it's there.
if I was designing this logo. well I would start with the name because I didn't understand what it is for.

Every opinion counts xD Thanks ^^

Thanks! I'm glad I changed it xD I did like the cursive but this has a cleaner feel to it.

Thank you! Yea the font is much better xD

Thank you for the suggestions! It actually is the same font, but arena is uppercase and circus is lowercase. I added the spikes onto circus because I felt it gave it a more 'circus-y' feel xD The name is the name of the VN, and has to do with what it's about. It's set in a future where people have battles in arena's to determine their rank, and it has a circus like atmosphere because of the nature of the fights. They're more like performances to entertain the audience. And the race that runs these battles dress in a very fanciful, colorful way to show off their wealth. The symbol after arena is the logo of the people that put on these battles, and the starburst like things are a form of currency in the game that people use to determine rank.

Maybe I'll try using both uppercase or both lowercase.

Edit: Ended up going with both uppercase! I also made them the same color.

Hmm... I still like the top one (the older version, where the fonts are different). It feels more dynamic and modern. Although, the newer versions have some kind of old American Circus poster in them, but personally, I like the harmony in the older one better than the rest. The illustration also works most in there, too.

If I can make a second choice, then it would probably be the bottom one. It's easier to read, more simple, with a simple touch of illustration that make it overall simple in a good way. :)

Hmm, I do like the composition of the older one... I'll play around with it some more, see if I can find a happy medium.

And thanks again so much for your feedback! Everyone is so nice ;-;

I suggest the use of red to show rage/bloody fights (if you have lots of blood spilling), this yellow for wealth and blue for futuristic feeling.
you can find lots of cool fonts with a futuristic feel to them on the internet.
but the thing I insist on is the name! with the info you shared about theme of the game use of circus feels kind of wrong. it it's not too late to change the name I suggest "something" Arena.
this somehow reminds me of the movie hunger games. 8)

The whole game is circus themed, so I still really want to use it in the title xD you can find more info about the theme by clicking the link in my signature. Thank you for the suggestions though ^^

ok then ^_^ just make sure you've chosen right from the players\buyers point of view because getting their attention is the important thing here.

I want to use a sort of vintage looking font for the game, as well as more hard edges than soft curves. I haven't gotten any other complaints about the font, and I think it fits the feel really well! So I think I'm going to stick with it. Thank you again for your help though.
