Hi Aiko. Some tips I can give right off the bat.
Observe real people and their faces so you can see how proportions work; in fact, if you're just getting into drawing again, I highly suggest starting off with naturalistic studies of gestures and basic human anatomy. You can still practice developing your animanga style, but really supplement it by learning the basics of basics.
Here's a dedicated list of resources you can take a look at.
What program are you using and are you using a tablet? Right now your line widths are too similar and as a result, the head shot looks kind of chunky since the lines don't taper. When it comes to lines, there's variation and line thickness to take into account.
Here's a tutorial on line thickness that should get you thinking: http://cubesona.deviantart.com/art/TUTO ... -517994016

Thanks for your advice! I'll definitely look into learning a semi-realistic style.
I do use a tablet, and the program I use is Sketchbook Pro. I must confess, until now, I never gave much thought to the thickness of my lines. I looked at the tutorial, and re-did pretty much all of the lines on that drawing. I think it's a bit better now.

Have you tried any other program? I never used Sketchbook Pro, so I don't have any advice for such a program. The lines don't look too bad, but I think they need more tapering.
I can recommend FireAlpaca. It's like a lighter version of Paint Tool SAI, but it's free and it's for both Mac and PC.

Have you tried drawing with your arms? From what I see you're drawing with your wrist which results in rigid and almost squiggly lines. Also try to draw your lines with a single, quick stroke.
An exercise I'd recommend to get into this habit is to draw basic shapes like circles, squares and triangles with just one continuous stroke, draw it quick and don't lift the pen! Do this and fill a page and just do it regularly (like once a day). It doesn't really matter if you do it in paper or on the computer, the goal is to make your hand get used to drawing. It will be a bit difficult at first, but once you get the hang of it, it will make your lines clean and fluid, and in the long run, you'll improve your line quality.

I looked into this, and apparently as a default, the program doesn't have tapered lines, but it is a setting that can be changed. I now know how to taper the lines. I use Sketchbook Pro because it's the best program I've seen available for my tablet.MaiMai wrote:Have you tried any other program? Wow, I never really payed attention to things like this, but it turns out I do draw with my wrist! I'll definitely practice drawing with my whole arm.crestforge wrote:Have you tried drawing with your arms? I haven't really done any more drawing since my tablet charger broke, but I'm getting a new one this week, and I'll post something soon!

I think there's too much lines on the hair. It looks more like tree trunk texture. You can see lots of tuts here to give you a better idea of how hair works

Yeah, hair's definitely not my strong suit. And face shape. I think I do eyes fairly well, though.King-sama wrote:I think there's too much lines on the hair. It looks more like tree trunk texture. You can see lots of tuts here to give you a better idea of how hair works

Anyways, here's a sketch testing out tapered lines. I used a different brush than usual, as well, Nd I think its a bit better than my other ones.

Changed some stuff and attempted to color it! I honestly don't know how to feel about it.

It's been awhile since I posted anything in this thread, so here's random concept art of one of the characters from one of my WIPs!
