Ryuushiro-Waffle's Art Thread [Critiques are welcome!]

#1 Post by Ryuushiro » Mon Apr 06, 2015 11:05 am

Ah, hello everyone ;u; ~
I’m pretty new to the VN community, so please have patience with me (ノ´д`)

I recently did my first work as an artist on Maid with Perfection. However, I’m very much aware that my drawing skills are very undeveloped, and decided to post here to seek feedback! (Since I never recieve feedback on my drawings when I post them on twitter or tumblr (˘_˘٥))

Do not be shy, gimme that critique! My weak point is anatomy, to be honest. Also, if there is something in particular about a drawing that you liked, please tell me as well so I can keep doing it! (。●́‿●̀。)
Without further ado, here are some drawings of mine. Just Four, but It’s a start! I’ll post some more asap~
I have a few questions on the pic's comments, but please feel free to point out anything you'd like!

Thank you, everyone ~

This is a sprite I did for a friend for his WIP vn! It was the first time I did two poses for the same sprite. Do they look like the same person?...

Coloring comparison! Be honest with me, does it look better? Was the darker lineart on the eyes from earlier prettier?
comparison.png
This one is a simple comparison! I can totally see that I still need to fix the newest one's right hand though. It looks really weird, doesnt it?...

A-aha = 7 =" this is a nekopara/Seduce me fanart... //// I'm a bit shy to post it, but I would love to hear your thoughts on it! (I think Sam's arms look really weird...is it just me?)

For the second drawing, I much prefer the darker eyelashes. The coloring's pretty great, like with the third drawing. Your previous drawing has barely any contrast in her hair, but you fixed that and in the new one, it looks better. Darker base color for her hair, and the hair looks more unified in that your hair flows more naturally. Also the fourth drawing, try to practice on your hands, I still have problems with hands from time to time, but as they say, practice makes perfect.

All I can really say is you should brush up on your anatomy. You've kinda got the basics right, but I suggest going in-depth with it, just so you could add more depth and detail to your drawings. Once you've got anatomy pretty much understood, you could go into perspectives. Anatomy plus perspective would make your drawings even better, more poses to draw from different perspectives.

That's all I can say from what I'm seeing. You're doing great imo.

Haha, thank you! Still got much to learn, though! Also, about the hand... Maybe it's because it's a little hidden? ;u; Since I BS'd my way through it, I can totally see that it needs some fixing though! ahaha > u <

Wow, thank you so much for the constructive criticism! <3
I see what you mean about the darker base color and more contrast! I know I prefered it like that, but I could not put a finger on it to say why. It really is what you said!
Ah I see wha you mean about the hands as well! Maybe his arms looked weird to me because I did not got the hands right. I will practice drawing characters with crossed arms more often!

And yes, anatomy will be the death of me. I will be sure to practice it more like you suggested and share some more dynamic drawings here when I get the chance!
Thank you very much for your help again!!! ; 7 ;

(also, here is that one drawing with darker eyelashes now for comparison: )

Honestly, your coloring is pretty awesome. It's very soft and smooth, which I tend to love. As far your anatomy goes, I don't think it's that bad. Drawing hands is a weakness for me, too. The best tips I can give when it comes to anatomy is practice of course, but also make use of references. Take a look at anatomy books or other artist's works. It also helped me to remember when creating a hand's size that a hand is large enough to cover a person's face. But your art is very beautiful and I can really see the improvements from one drawing to another. Just keep practicing!

Thank you very much for your compliments and critiques! > u < You are too kind!
Ah, hands. I'm yet to find someone who likes drawing them. (I'm sure those artists are ou there somewhere though! haha)
But that hand trick about covering the face!!! I had never heard of it before and I'm so glad you told me this!!! I will try to remember that!
I used to have some magazines on poses, but they were specifically about manga style. I will find some books on realistic anatomy so I can properly learn how to stylize anatomy after learning it.

Thank you so much again > u <

(I'll try to upload some more drawings here later for more feedback! Thank you everyone for your help! <3)

Hello, everyone~

Got a few more drawings up now!
> u <

Phew, I finally got time to upload these.
Not many, but I guess it's better than nothing, heh? ;u;

If you would like to, help me improve by giving me feedback > u < <3

Two versions of the same character! Imagine she has different rpg classes on each one, haha~ One is more 'magic' related with dark colors while the other seems to rely on her weapon and has a lighter color palette. Which do you prefer? c:
differentstyle.png
This is not my usual 'very kawaii uguuu~' style, and the drawing is more of a sketch, but I would like to hear opinions about it. I think I like it a bit, but somehow I still prefer my more 'animu-moeee' style //kicked hard
Charactersketch.png
Male character design to match the character bellow! They are a cute little pair, these two u v u Something about his shoulders is bothering me, though. Any suggestions about the design? c:
loli sprites.png
Cute sprites for a cute main character! I really really liked her for some reason ;7;
scene_sketch.png
And now the last two characters together! This one is more of a test! I was trying to draw a more dynamic 'cg-ish' scene. I used yoshibb's trick about the hand-to-face proportion there, but the guy's hand (and everything else) is very much a sketch at the moment. After all it was more of a test, really.

I come with more stuff~

This time I tried my hand at drawing backgrounds and GUI and...honestly, my respect for GUI and BG artists is so high after this experience. I wasn't prepared on how hard this would be.
I hope to draw some indoors bgs sometime but it is SO tiresome! ;0; How do you people even manage to draw backgrounds? haha!

I also made a sprite out of that sketch I posted earlier! ;u;

*Creates characters, personalities, relationships, builds world, prepares backstories...* Wow this looks good now I should probably think of a plot! *never touches it again*

First off: the BG I did. THIS WAS SO TIRING ASHFSDGJ- I still see some flaws in it but I was so, so tired and had just been staring at it for too long, so I decided to leave it be before I lost my sanity.
comparison sketch.png
Here is the sprite done~ ...Almost - 7 - I wanna fix some things on him yet, but this is pretty much the finished thing. ...His sketch was so ugly ;u; I am so sorry my child. At least now you look better.
Redonemockup1.png
And here is everything together! This is really just for a small project I'm doing with a friend. No release date or even plot defined - 7 - ...I'm not sure if it's ever gonna happen but it was a good excuse to train myself on drawing this stuff!!! > u <

This is how the textbox would look when the MC is not the one talking~

This is really cool. Do you mind me asking what materials did you use for your art? (Sprite, background) Color pencils, watercolors, etc.? :)

Sorry everyone, I've been away for quite a while! ;-; I've been working on comissions and also got a septoplasty done, recovery was quite slow~ ó 7 ò
I'm still usually active on tumblr and facebook, but I mostly forget to check lemmasoft <_<

As for news, I have both a deviantart and a facebook account now~ // links are in my signature

And a few new drawings in all of those accounts, so feel free to check them if you want~

I'm leaving this one cute drawing I've finished~ I mostly used pastel colors this time, it was a bit tricky because I did not want it to look too bright...? Tell me what you think, I'm always open for criticism!

Sorry again for forgetting to post orz

Darling, sorry for the late reply! All the drawings I've posted here were drawn fully digitally on Paint Tool SAI, with a Wacom tablet and later went to photoshop so I could fix some lightning effects~ ;3; I hope that helps!

definitely awesome! I like the latest picture; darker eyelashes really gives a place to rest for everything in our sight, especially when the other coloring is complex/pastel-ish. The pink DS looks a little off, though, I cannot pinpoint the thing... Perhaps it's the way that the thickness in left side is different than the right side...? A study of perspective would be awesome here.

The foot looks incomplete. I suggest looking in the mirror for relative positioning of body limbs~

Aside of that, awesome. Much respect to you! I wish I could draw guys as handsome and girls as cute as this OwO

Thank you so much for the criticism! I'm always very grateful for it! ;7;

I do see what you mean about the DS! It's something I honestly hadn't notice before, though I really wish I had. I guess it just slipped through me because I had been staring at it for too long but that's no excuse for it >__> I'll be more careful with objects next time!

As for the foot, yessss @_@ it gave me so much work! I surely need more practice at drawing feet in different positions. I'll try to draw a pose like this again sometime, but sockless, so I can focus on that!

Thank you so much again! <3 For both the compliments and the constructive criticism! ; 7 ; It really helps me a lot!
