I've been trying to do what you mentioned but I think I lack the knowledge of what colour to use and when/where to use it!
Just try experimenting! I'm also lacking in this aspect, but by doing it more we can be better. I'm glad that I can help. I'll try to see if there's any video/tutorials that can teach more about coloring in general, but honestly any kind of tutorials are worth watching, the art style might be different (realistic-anime-semi realism) but the basics are the same.

Oh and one thing that help my art tremendously, try using different kind of brushes and see which brush looks better, my art improved a lot because of it.
Now I have at least different brush for different situations (coloring, lineart, sketching, shading, effects).

I see, well I tried a number of brushes but one worse than the other... either I don't how to use them or I don't know how to use them! but I'm always looking for good brushes (CSP) if you know of anything interesting please let me know! I'd appreciate it!

I'll also use this chance to share my newer work so that I don't spam the topic!

tried darker skin here, using a light blue dress to add a bit of contrast!

It has been a while, I have dropped 2 works so far, couldn't bother finishing them, I sometimes just want to draw something new... maybe I can go back to them someday, but for now, I'm just uploading a wip, would be helpful to know if the anatomy is ok, also any other tips would be well appreciated!

I like this piece a lot! The shading is really well done.
