Well, the composition is not different at all, so I think you should go with what fits the scene most.

Other things to consider:
- is BG on the right one matches the BG in the whole VN? If yes, actually, I like this one, provided there's no white outlining to the characters to make them blend with the BG. It gives a sense of time and place.
- Does red fit the emotion conveyed in the scene? If yes, then probably you should go with this one. I don't personally like groundless CGs, but it fits the style of the character's arts. :>

^100% that.

EDIT: Sorry, new to the forum, realized I should have elaborated on that position!

As long as you've established where the characters are in a scene, you can do a lot of fun stuff with background elements. This is why after you have the exterior establishing shot in a manga, there will usually be an interior establishing shot, showing where all the characters are in a scene, and where they are in relation to each other. Once you have that set up, you can usually eschew the background on close up and medium shots, and get away with depictions of the characters in non-literal space.

SO, if your characters have changed location, and this is their first appearance in a new place, the screen with the background is more appropriate.

If you've already shown that background, you can get away with a non-literal backdrop, and question if the background is emotionally true to the scene.
